Late night cooking

Is your kitchen used late at night?

When remodeling, I never thought noise would be an issue even though our master bedroom would be directly over the kitchen. When first done I had some issues hearing people making breakfast but soon got used to it and now it never wakes me up.

Then DD started having friends over to make cakes etc. Often their cooking would go late and I would be yelling down the stairs to please be quieter.

Now DS cooks most of his own meals, as he is on some body building diet. He comes into the kitchen to start all his cooking for the next day at about 10 pm just when we are going to bed. He turns the exhaust fan on high, has the radio on, runs the blender, etc.

Not looking for advice on what to do now. We have asked DS to please start cooking earlier but that is not always possible for him.

All this just surprises me as we never expected the kitchen to get so much use after dinner time. As a teenager you would never find me in the kitchen at all at anytime. Even now, if I'm working on something for the next day I tend to say "I'll do it in the morning" rather than be in the kitchen late.

Do you cook late and is noise an issue?

No late cooking, or anything else for that matter, at our house. We are very early risers, almost always up by 5am or earlier, so our kitchen is usually cleaned up and closed by 7pm.

I don't cook late because noise is an issue. But I certainly would if it weren't. I am a night owl and get most productive after everybody else goes to bed. Something about the quiet house makes me very focused. If I had an in-home gym where my noise didn't bother anybody else, I would work out late too.

I once had a hanging basket that had upwards of 30 or more blooms at once. This was in the days before digital cameras and I had no film in my old 35 mm. I had been watching the buds for days, and then one night about 10:30 I smelled the most delicious fragrance wafting in the bedroom window. It was blooming! Bob was asleep, the neighbor's lights were out so I had no one to share the magical event with. As Jim says all were gone by early morning. But I'll never forget it! People often thought it was a stag horn fern as it hung from low branches of a pecan tree by the pool. It was a huge and heavy thing and I'd lug it in the family room for the winter. One winter I didn't take it down in time to save it from freezing. :-( Oh well, beauty like fame is sometimes very fleeting, but I'm thankful for the memory.

If you'll have a cooler or access to a refrigerator, these are good: ROQUEFORT GRAPES (makes 50) 1 lb large, seedless red grapes 10 oz pecans 4 TBL crumbled Roquefort cheese 8 oz pkg cream cheese, softened 2 TBL heavy cream Wash the grapes & pat dry. Crush the pecans on a platter or sheet of waxed paper. Combine the Roquefort, cream cheese & cream in a bowl & mix well. Roll the grapes in the cheese mixture & then in the pecans, coating well. Chill, covered, until serving time.~~ First Impressions BRIE CRISPS 4 oz Brie, rind removed, at room temperature 1 stick butter at room temperature 2/3 cup flour 2 generous dashed cayenne, or to taste 1/8 tsp salt Paprika Combine the cheese & butter in a processor & mix until creamy. Add the flour, cayenne & salt & blend until the dough almost forms a ball in the processor. Shape into a 2" cylinder & wrap tightly in plastic wrap. Refrigerate overnight. Slice the dough into 1/4" rounds, place 2" apart on a cookie sheet & bake in a preheated 400Â° oven for 10-12 minutes or until the edges are brown. Cool on a rack. Sprinkle w/paprika.~~ Beyond Parsley CASHEW WAFERS (about 75) 1 lb extra sharp Cheddar, shredded 1 cup unsalted butter, room temperature 1 tsp salt 3/4 tsp cayenne 1 cup sifted flour 2 cups dry roasted cashews, finely chopped Preheat oven to 325Â°. Bring cheese to room temperature & beat until smooth. Beat in butter, 1 TBL at a time. Add salt & cayenne. Stir in flour, 2 TBL at a time. Add nuts & form a ball. Chill dough & form into small balls. Place on lightly greased cookies sheets, spaced 1" apart. Flatten with fork tines dipped in flour. Bake 20-25 minutes. Cool & store in an airtight container until ready to serve.~~ You can all different things to jazz up this hummus recipe & serve it with rice crackers or pita wedges: HUMMUS (about 3 cups) 2 cups cooked or canned chick-peas, drained 2/3 cup tahini (sesame paste) 3/4 cup fresh lemon juice 2 garlic cloves, peeled Salt & pepper to taste 1/4 cup finely chopped green onions Parsley leaves (Italian) Place the chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, garlic, salt & pepepr in a food processor & blend until smooth. Sitr in the green onions. Pile into a small bowl & garnish with the parsley leaves. Serve with pita bread or rice crackers. You can add minced red bell pepper to this also.~~

I'm finishing a restoration of a shelf clock mechanism that was built in 1830. That's just the mechanism, mind you. There's much left to do cosmetically on the case. This old clock keeps good time for a pendulum regulated clock. I could improve it designing a temperature compensated pendulum, however, it is good the way it is and is authentic in form and function. It was my wife's grandfather's clock. We estimate that the clock was 70 yr old when he acquired it. According to a note I found on the back of the clock face, it had been repaired in 1933. That repair included the replacement of a gear. I found a note inscribed on that gear that named both the repairman and the owner. This clock should be good for another 50 years.

No one here currently cooks late. But people snack after I go to bed and leave their debris. It annoys me. I have wished I could " close" the kitchen.

Our kitchen is not under another room, but it is close enough to the stairs going to the bedrooms that noise could be a problem. It causes me to refrain from unloading the dishwasher in the evenings, because my son goes to bed early (4:45am wake-up for work). Our dishwasher is one of the quieter models; the vent, unfortunately, not nearly as quiet as desirable. The morning whirl of the coffee-grinder is annoyingly loud if I am downstairs, but doesn't bother me if I am asleep.

I would be distraught to learn if Whirlpool had removed the "silence" feature from their microwave. I don't need, nor want, beeps. I dislike (hate!, really) their noise even during the day.

Since our family has varied schedules and sleep practices, kitchen noise can be a problem. I'm the night owl.

The weeks before big holiday meals I pull some late nights in the kitchen. But now that it's DH & me most of the time I usually have things completely cleaned by 8 pm. I set up our place settings for breakfast then, too.

However, when our 2 kids were home, & especially through their HS years & college breaks, things were not as structured & serene. We were like many parents who worked and tried to attend & support nearly all their musical performances & sports activities.

The kids didn't cook from scratch often, but the kitchen buzzed when we returned late from games & shows. I also spent many late nights making something for a bake sale, team pot luck, etc.

College years for my DS saw our home as a hub for his 4 roommates whose homes were very far away. Since ours was within a couple hours drive we hosted them for a number of midwinter & short holiday breaks. It was a lively house, but they were all good kids.

i wouldn't choose to start it all again, but I am happy for the memories. Try to embrace the chaos ;-)

My ds does make noise in the kitchen at night, i.e., slamming the microwave, etc. But late for me is 10:00 because I'm up for work between 4-4:30 am. Most of the time, I'm already out cold before he starts so I don't hear him. He's informed me that he'll be in there more since he needs to gain at least 10 pounds. Wish I were in his shoes.

I don't know if noise is a problem in my kitchen, because nobody cooks after dinner, and whatever snacking happens is quiet enough.

I have a story about late night cooking. My teenage brother got a hankering for sweets late one winter night, and decided to whip up a boxed brownie mix. In the oven it went, and back to the TV my brother went. And then he went to bed, completely forgetting the brownies! Next morning my mom awoke to a smokey kitchen and a pan of burnt brownies. My dad decided that the varying shades of black and brown and the rumpled texture looked interesting, so as a joke he hung it on the wall. We had some unusual art in our MCM home, and the brownies actually looked pretty good. It stayed there until the next summer, when one humid day it slid off its hook and smashed (smushed) on the floor. I'm just glad we didn't have a fire or get pantry pests from the whole episode!

I'm a night owl so a lot of my prep and baking is late night. However our kitchen is at the other end from the bedrooms. Noisiest thing is my KD mixer really. Our kitchen is also semi closed. It will be even more so if I ever get around to narrowing the open doorway to the family room. Even considering putting a pocket door there. I have always disliked open kitchens and we bought this house based on that. Then next section the builders built they opened up by putting half wall /bar between the kitchen and family room. So happy we got ours before that started.
