Smothering area around 100 year old Elm

I stupidly planted vinca major around half of our very old Elm tree. It is now a 6 foot swath of this invasive plant. I have dug up the vinca, but I know there will be remnants of it that will keeping growing. I need recommendations as to how I can eliminate the vinca without hurting the tree. TIA

Kudos for thinking of the tree! Smothering the vinca can also smother the tree roots, so I don't recommend putting down cardboard or anything impermeable over the root system. The tree needs to be able to pull moisture and oxygen from the soil. The root system on a 100 year old tree can be something like 3 times the diameter of the branching, so it's hard to know where the feeder roots of the tree are at this point. They may be well beyond the spot where you planted the vinca. I'm not a fan of chemicals, but this may be an instance where careful application of glyphosate (active ingredient in Round up) only to the vinca as it pops up may be the way to go.

Since I'm not well versed in herbicide chemical use, I hope others will chime in.

Thanks Barb. I have used Roundup on some of the pieces that I couldn't dig up. I am sure this is going to take a long time to eradicate.

Rose, how sad to see such a majestic beauty go down. It had to be done. Long story short: At the corner of the yard at the house my family lived in for many years was a tall, beautiful, perfectly shaped pine tree; the kind with those long slender cones. It shaded and provided privacy for the front porch. My DH died; years later I sold the house. I often wake up with a song going through my mind. One morning, a year or so after I sold it, it was the old song "They Cut Down the Old Pine Tree." I went to work that day and my boss, who lived across the street from the house, asked me if I knew the pine tree had been cut down. I couldn't believe it. I had to go and see. There was the stump. No sign of rot showing. Unbelievable! We knew the history of the house and knew when it was built and by whom. Also had met a lady who was born in that house. The house was built about a hundred years ago and that tree had "always" been there. You had no choice but to let your tree go. I'll never understand why anyone would cut down a solid old healthy tree. Don't understand how the mind works when I woke up with that song playing in my brain either. Woot! A positive ID, and such a lovely one too! I look forward to it flowering all summer for many years to come. Interestingly, this is the second potential link I've found to Portland. I do wonder who the rose lover was. On to pink rose #3. This rose is about 6' tall, upright, and shows no signs of pruning. It's quite vigorous and is pushing new canes up from the ground. It's growing in the roots of a Western Red Cedar that is at least 100 years old (we've seen it in aerial photos from the 1920s, and it wasn't small then). Quite thorny, this one is a repeat bloomer that bloomed continually all summer last year and has no hips. It's growing in a different area than the majority of the roses, so it could be from a different era, although so far they all seem to be from around the same time period. The buds are a coral pink, but it blooms out to a somewhat shocking bright pink. Someone who gardened here was a pink lover - the majority of roses are pink as are most of my 30' tall rhododendrons.

Here is an option that does a few things: - Keep most of the walls in place (cost savings) - Keep most of the plumbing in place (cost savings) - Keep the better kitchen layout. If you want it bigger you could pull the peninsula out toward the living room and gain more space. I can actually offer a better kitchen layout also that doesn't have the fridge blocking the view from the foyer to the living room. - Great size and bright master closet. - Better placed sink in powder room. - Used some odd foyer space for the laundry. - Can add some bench/lockers in the foyer on the master bedroom wall. Weakness: - Powder room opens to living room - living room may get cramped to fit a dining table. Consider moving powder room to foyer on master bedroom wall. (adds cost but allows for larger master bathroom or use that space for living room built-ins etc.) Enjoy!

As a former owner of a 1900 Victorian, hope you have deep pockets because I see a good bit of work and restoration. Renting the whole house seems challenging at best. Porch looks like there might be some wood condition issues. What budget are you planning for? Will you upgrade plumbing and electrical and sewer lines. These infrastructure items can eat a budget fast and must be done. Big undertaking. We had a 10 year plan and the house was owned by one person. Year 10 we got job transfers and second redo of kitchen got handed off to new owners. I wouldn’t tear down any walls. If people come, they are looking for a 1920 experience. Not a modernization. We sold our house in hours. At asking price. So think things through. Research what renters want.

I have mulched heavily near trees to smother grass and other plants. I was a little nervous thinking about the oxygen deprivation thing. I believe the smother technique worked excellent. The areas that were heavily mulched didn't seem to be lacking in oxygen. If anything with the amount of worms it was more oxygenated. I have been careful not to mulch against the trunk.
