What do you put on your new granite counter tops?
Comments (15)We just had our template done yesterday so I won't have granite for another 2 weeks or so but I'll probably do something similar to what I've done in the past. I have a clear glass bowl that I keep lemons and limes in (I use lemons a lot in cooking) I also have a paper towel holder and my my coffee pot out and usually a small potted plant on the sunny part of my counter. I cannot live without having my cookbook out so I have a decorative plate stand that I use for it (see link below). The majority of my cookbooks are stored over my range in the cupboard and I have to drag a chair over...so instead I've compiled my most frequently used recipes into one book and it sits on the counter. Here is a link that might be useful: plate stand similar to the one I use for my cookbook...See Moreusing countertop micro UNDER counter -- 3 feet rule?????
Comments (7)The testing thing makes the most sense. I used to be involved in patient-based clinical research and the parameters of study were sometimes quite narrow, to limit the number of variables. Then, when the new drug application was filed with the FDA and the "labeled use" was determined, the indications of the drug could be interpreted rather narrowly. Using the drug or device outside these parameters often made sense, but it could not be promoted for such. Its probably a similar thing...it was tested on a standard height kitchen counter so it is "labeled for use" at standard kitchen counter height, when in reality, its use at other heights is not contraindicated. I recently saw a kitchen where the OTR microwave was 60" off the floor. I think it is much more dangerous to be removing a steaming dish at eye level than below waist level, but it was mounted OTR as tested, so it was not in violation. I have also seen them on top of refrigerators: again, removing something from over the head or while standing on a stool is more dangerous,,,but it is above the 3' height--so its in an okay spot according to the specs. But not in practice....See MoreDo you have a speed oven in island or under counter
Comments (10)We did this in our home with a Viking microwave. I will never make that mistake again. Such a pain to bend down and see the buttons when it was installed under our bar counter. Yes, the location was nice as I could just pass warm food across the bar, but not worth the ridiculous setup. However, this is because the Viking had the buttons on the front (meaning against my waist when standing in front of it). Other brands have flip down dials and things to work around this issue. If you can’t see the buttons without bending down or contorting yourself somehow, steer clear! We just bought a new Wolf Speed oven for a new home we are building and I told our designer to make absolutely sure it’s at a level that I can see while standing. This is because the Wolf M series has a front buttons, no angle, like our old Viking. Lesson learned! Last thing- I will admit that after years of use on the Viking I did mostly know where the buttons were without looking too closely, it was still a major pain when grandparents or guests used it. Not worth it! Install in a tower at a level that matches the counter!...See MoreWall oven under counter but NOT under cooktop - still too low??
Comments (19)I got a push/pull stick to help with my somewhat low oven: https://www.etsy.com/search?q=oven%20sticks You can get inexpensive ones on Amazon, but I love my hand carved walnut stick from Etsy. The stick definitely helps to keep hands & arms away from hot doors. And I can hook the stick on the edge of the open door to pull the door upwards a bit, then shut the door. Less stooping that way. It is surprisingly easy to give my oven door a gentle lift with the stick. Most ovens have roller racks now, so a stick is a great help there. Also keep in mind that you don't use the bottom-most rack too often. Heavy turkeys or cast iron Dutch ovens might be a problem, but only occasionally. At least with a push/pull stick you can easily pull a rack out to get the heavy item in a better position for lifting. My issue with low placed ovens are the controls. Bending over to see the control panel is a bit awkward. I find with my oven I sometime hit the wrong selection just because I'm not bending down enough to view the control panel straight on. Some tiimes I use the phone app for the oven -- those controls are always at eye level....See Morehvtech42
