Next Year's Order - Regan or Local?

I'm thinking about next year, and I couldn't decide whether to get my roses mail-order or to order them from a local nursery. I figured local would be less expensive since there would be no shipping charge.

I want 2 Oklahomas and 3 Boleros. My local nursery (part of a California chain) wants $135 before taxes. Regan Nursery is asking $107, including shipping. They offer a 10% discount, but so do the local guys -- only their starting price per rose is some $7 higher.

I've bought roses from both places before, but the comparison isn't valid since I bought bare-roots from Regan and 3-gallons from the nursery. The Regan bare-roots were pretty meager, but did okay (just okay). Are they selling an inferior product? I love a bargain, but I'd gladly pay an extra $28 for a superior rose.

Has anyone had considerable experience with Regan and/or Armstrong Garden Centers?

Regans has always sent me good healthy plants so if bare roots are OK with you I'd go with them. The reason the nursery price is higher is because you're paying for them to pot them up and grow them out a bit before you buy them. That all costs money and the nursery has to charge more.

Regan Nursery is less than 10 miles from where I live. Last weekend, for the heck of it, ( I do not need any more roses), I went for a visit. They have a huge huge lot which is full to the brim with all kind of plants. Maybe 1/2 of their land is dedicated to rose. When they get their bare root roses from suppliers, like J&P and DA, they sort them out and bury their roots under layer of compost or other loose material. They keep moistening the roots and canes. Roses they sell is the same quality as roses I have gotten directly from J&P and DA: huge root system and green and lively canes. That weekend was their last day that they were selling bare root. After that they pot all their unsold roses in paper pot and will sell them till September locally. FJ

I got 2 from Edmunds when I was able. Planted both plants about 20" apart where they get mid afternoon shade. 1st summer they grew and bloomed OK but this year they went crazy. 5' tall, covered in good foliage with tons of beautiful blooms. The blooms aren't big but in the spring and fall they get some good size to them. If you order this beauty, order 2 and plant fairly close together for a great effect. It blends fairly well with oranges or whites.

Long Island? I lived there breifly and remember lots of nice nurseries. What I do , is drop in on a slow day in winter , and ask to see what they’ll be getting for spring. Never have I been turned down to see their coming list . I’ve even screenshot it so I can plan my purchases , and they’ve been nice enough to call when they come in so I can pick first . Another tip you may not have noticed is is you order from sayy palantine , up to 9 roses is 40$. So I order as many as I can to be able to lessen the hurt of shipping. Maybe regans is similar And I tell myself that saves me on gas and time driving around looking for a rose . But I still drive around looking anyway lol

Sylvia , I’ve been super pleased with their service . Costco feels like a cattle herding service . So impersonal, no one ever ever helps or offers unless you stop them in their tracks . When I go to sams I am offered help to my car if my load seems big and if they don’t offer I ask and they are so happy to do so. Those bags of soil get so heavy after a while ! When I found the white pots , a girl had just cranked the pallet out from the back . I gasped and said oh my gosh how much are those ? She happily unwrapped them , scanned it , and went and got me a flat bed , loaded it for me and took it to the front since I had my baby in a cart ! That’s service !!! I love sams club !! Summers , they are popular in the south, or where when they were made !! I do follow someone in Ny who has the matching settee!! What a find . I’d be so thrilled if I found one . I just placed an order with Regans because they have such a large variety. Last year I bought all of my roses from my local nursery the last weekend in February. Their roses are $35 but they have them buy 3 get 1 free on that weekend so that is 4 roses for $105 + tax. That is still higher than buying them from Regans by about $23. They carry Weeks roses and pretty much have the same thing all the time so to get what I wanted this year I ordered from Regans I get all of my annuals from the nursery so I don't feel bad for ordering online.

Kim, I know Green Arrow and go out there two or three times a year. I bought Sexy Rexy, Chihuly, Passionate Kisses, and probably more from them, and they're doing splendidly. I don't know why I didn't think of them. I'm sure they have online pre-ordering just like the place down the street.

Beth, I know what you mean about Regan's variety. They do seem to have almost everything. Seil, you make sense as always. Perhaps if I'd thought about it for five more minutes I would have figured it out myself ... but I didn't.

Actually, I'll probably end up going out to Otto's in Ventura County -- they have acres and acres amid the orange groves, and it's a beautiful drive from here. It just means deferred gratification. So difficult.
