New Quantum Fios Router

Has anyone switched from the Verizon Actiontec router to the new Quantum router?

I ask because I'd like to know if I can just change the hookups and be instantly connected?

Will I have to fight and set up a new password?

(I always have problems whenever I change to new equipment, whether it's a pc or router)
This is a direct connection and no wifi will be involved.

It'd be great if I can just plug it in and go!

There should be no issue setting it up, the new ones are getting easier.

If there were an issue Verizon would walk you through it.

Knowing Routers, yes you will have to Set Passwords etc... The Passwords are what will keep you secure, no password, no security! Like Zep516 stated above, the processes are getting much easier these days, plus Verizon can walk you thru the Setup!

no one offers FiOS but Verizon in US. Not sure what she is getting there it may be some type of fiber optic somewhere in her community but thus far Verizon is the only company that has fiber optic to the house or premises(FTTP), some have it to the street some to the neighborhood node(FTTN). with Verizon FiOS they come to the house and run the cable in the house and put a new special type of box (ONT) on the outside of the house and install the software on the computer and set it up and install the special router before they leave, they also install a battery backup for the unit they put on the house because if the power goes out you lose phone and internet (fiber does not carry power like the old copper phone lines do), the battery backup usually holds for a few hours. I had one of the first houses in the US installed with Verizon FiOS, I was a test house here in Texas. I loved having FiOS. Verizon FiOS I would worry about turning my laptop over to the phone company! does she have a firewall running on it? has that been configured to allow connections? with out knowing more about the ISP and connections she is dealing with hard to advise.

back when I had fios I had a router special to fios which had firmware dedicated to fios. That was the only one used. I don't know if it has changed, you can check out the verizion fios forum at dsl reports they have lots of verizon techs that hang there. Here is a link that might be useful: forum

for routers I stick with liksys the only other one I used was a dlink and it was the one that was provided when I had verizon fios, all that I buy are linksys/cisco. If you already have an N router what are you wanting to upgrade? I found this to be a really good article on routers How to Buy a Wireless Router

Jn3344 - we are still under construction.. My builder decided that he would wait until he heard snow was in forecast (NJ) and then decided to rip out sidewalks.. We then uncovered a water leak and a sewer issue.. So now we are still waiting on water company to finish (going on 3 weeks) so that sidewalks can be poured and we can apply for temporary co.. It's been a mess and every time we get a glimmer of hope we get crushed by something.. It's just been an overall mess with this builder.. Guy had nice weather up until February and decides that's when he wants to do outside work.. It amazes me.. Basically the inside of house is complete.. Minor touch ups with paint and some misc items that need fixing.. But everything else inside is good to go.. Oh and we took a visit at site and uncovered this mess..

As I suspected .. It was a pain to get up and running!

I have no idea what the problem was or why it eventually started to work.

The connections are exactly the same, including the connection to the coax.

After connecting and turning the new quantum router on, it showed internet connected on the task bar but wouldn't connect to any web pages?

I unplugged the thing, powered back up and after that, I couldn't get any connection message at all? (No internet access)

I rebooted the thing .. same thing!

I got so frustrated that I went and watched tv for an hour, came
back to change back to the old actiontec router and .. what do you know?
The thing (router) had fixed itself!? Everything is working!!

It has to renew the IP Adress from the service provider, that's probably part of the reason it took some time.

Yep, glad it's working! Did you need to Set a Password, you should have had to to make your Network Secure! Check your documentation if you weren't prompted to set a password. If you can't get it figured out call Verizon for help! Your Devices (Tablets, Laptops, Smartphones, etc..) should tell you if your connection is protected or unprotected.
