If we could insure that the load were to remain constant for the entire 30 day period you could rely upon a 1.59 kw generator. 746watts of electrical energy equals 1 horsepower of mechanical energy, so in a perfect world, it the generator could produce electrical energy exactly equal to mechanical output you would need a 2 hp gas motor. A 2hp gas motor typically consumes 2 gal/hr and fuel is $1.95 a gallon so you need $3.90/hr for fuel x (24 hours x 30 days) or 720 hrs @ $3.90 hr = $2808. But even that will not do the job, because your electrical demand is not constant. An electric range requires 50amps at 220volt (P=E x I where P is watts, E is electomotive force(volts) and I is inductive force (amps) therefore the range requires 50 x 220 or 11,000 watts. To produce 11,000 watts you would need a 14.74 horsepower generator (11,000 watts divided by 746 watts electrical per horsepower) you would need another 10 or 15 horse power when the AC comes on, etc etc etc. Over the years i have heard many people say they were going to buy a gernerator and produce their own power, but in truth, if everything worked perfect, you still could not produce enought electric to satisfy your home for a thousand times what commercial power costs....See MoreNew (in U.S.) Persil laundry detergent

A licensed appliance repair person (he really was our own 'maytag man'), drove a store van stocked with parts and there were more in the storage room at the store so a service call was a one stop accomplishment ;) The service man taught all of us younger women how to do laundry and it stuck. I don't understand how the pods would work for me (I do use them in my dishwasher)...one of his rules was start with about half the amount of soap indicated on the box or jug. Lift the lid and check, is it too much, or a load more heavily soiled where more might be required. He pointed out like fertilizer companies, soap companies are in the business of selling soap and the more you use, the bigger their profit whether good for your machine or your clothes. I've never in my life used the full measurement of soap when doing laundry. I've seen the Persil mentioned on the laundry forum but haven't seen it in a store. I buy powered Tide at Costco, the HE version now, and I don't buy it very often, a box lasts months and I do some heavily soiled laundry....See MoreWhat type of curtains/blinds/shades can I use here, and here and here?
Comments (10)Wow, that was a harsh response. Does it matter who designed/built this house? Keep in mind this is someone's home and by the few pictures shown I'm betting their dream home. mjammjam since window treatments are quite expensive and should be thought out, I'd go to Lowe's/Home Depot and grab the temporary paper shades for the windows where you need the most privacy. It will buy you some time while you figure this out. I think in your dining room you could still use curtains but the rod would have to be centered in that small strip of wall between moldings. You'd want the curtains hug wide to the sides so that when open they just meet the side moldings so your trim shows. I'm assuming you don't want to cover it up. But certainly you could use decorative Roman shades - that would be lovely, too. Your slider is very tricky and I think any type of shade is going to be problematic from a convenience standpoint. What comes to my mind is a curtain (would have to be hung from the ceiling I believe) that draws to the right over the stationary part of the door. When fully open it will still cover some of that glass but I can't see a way to avoid that. Then something simple with a slim profile hung as an inset mount on the side windows - it appears there is room for something like a cellular. Not sure if silhouettes have a slim enough profile. Same with your LR windows. Not sure what the last picture is about. Think this through - if you don't have furniture yet, whatever you choose for your windows will drive what you do there especially if you choose fabric roman shades or curtains with color and pattern....See MoreWhat’s wrong here?
Comments (32)Depends on your version of "quick fix" Quickest and cheapest: - Get some colorful barstools - Add some simple decorations (like baskets or vases) above wall cabinets to fill that space. - Remove the cabinet covering above the microwave/cabinet stack and replace with drywall. Paint same color as your walls Getting less quick and more expensive: - Remove microwave and cabinet and replace with a proper vent hood. Find a cheap countertop microwave and hide it in the pantry if seldom used - replace dark black backsplash with something lighter. Most expensive (other than a completely new kitchen): - Remove and replace upper wall cabinets with ones that are the all the same height. - Get rid of OTR microwave and get real vent hood - Replace dark countertops and backsplash with something lighter and warmer - Replace sheetrock around island with matching wood panels of cabinets. - Install two pendant lights over island...See MoreLaundry Mich
