I found a new brand of chicken broth

I bought some Kirkland Organic, no salt chicken broth at Costco. Wow, is it ever good! It was $2 off, so $7.49 for 6 cartons.

When I need broth, I'll definitely be buying it there.

Great price. I've bought Kirkland before. I just ordered Swanson no salt added broth and am waiting for delivery.

Our Costco quit carrying the cases (of boxes) of Kirkland chicken broth a while back and replaced it with Kirkland Organic Chicken Stock. It does have some sodium in it. It's still very good. I shopped Costco on Wednesday but didn't have stock/broth on my list so if our specials coincide, I missed taking advantage of it.

I do use it - soups, gravies, sauces, liquid for cooking rice. I'll even heat a mug in the microwave when I'm not really hungry but want something hot to drink other than coffee or tea.

Chicken soup made with can broth?

Hi Kids, Well, I made the soup and it smells great! I used about 1/2 Pioneer Woman and 1/2 my own knowledge and history of chicken soups in my past. The one thing I did that seemed really bazarr to me was from Pioneer Women. She made a roux using butter and flour and added it to the broth. Man oh man, that woman looooooves her butter! I have never tried that but since I was living on the wild side, using chicken broth in a can and all, I tried it. I must say that it gives the broth a fuller, rounder and richer flavor. We will be eating it in about 20 minutes and I will let you all know how it is. But from what I have tasted of it, it's great! I have a nice, crusty loaf of bread ready to pot into the oven and I am getting hungry. Thanks again for all your help. sooey

How long is chicken broth good?

Broth stored in the refrigerator with the fat layer intact does keep a lot longer than without the fat layer, in my experience. "Larding" is an old preservation technique that you might like to research. Without the fat layer, I don't keep broth in the refrigerator for more than 3-4 days. If I have freezer space, I freeze in various size milk cartons--from the 1/2 pint whipping cream size up to 1/2 gallon. These stack nicely due to their square shape, are free for the saving, can be re-used several times (disinfect with a little bleach in water), defrost in the microwave or peel away the carton & add to the pot in a frozen state. Label & date with a Sharpie (before filling to avoid problems using the Sharpie because of condensation on the carton.) And no worry about breaking. I staple the top closed before I freeze. Just remember to remove the staples if you defrost in the microwave. Often as not, I end up canning the broth because my freezer is full. Am on the lookout for a tall pressure canner that will accommodate 1/2 gallon sized jars since I often need 2 qts of broth when making soup--and I'd rather use half as many canning lids if possible. I know there are all sorts of warnings about canning 1/2 gallon sizes but, because broth isn't dense, I'm not especially worried about the risks.

Except for the vinegar, this is very much like my "carrot bisque" recipe. Except I think my recipe has rice added. That is a great thing to do to carrot soup too!

Do the girls like mushrooms? I've made this one a few times now and it's always a hit. I don't know why you couldn't sub vegetable broth. Times I haven't had a mushroom assortment, I've made it with all crimini (adjusting the amount of broth needed if not hydrating porcini). And I've made it the day before (complete), cooled, chilled in the refer after baking until almost done - taken it out and finished heating and browning right before my dinner. Three Mushroom Dressing - Bon Appétit | November 1996 3 1/4 cups canned low-salt chicken broth 1 ounce dried porcini mushrooms, rinsed 6 tablespoons (3/4 stick) butter 2 cups chopped onions 1 cup chopped celery 2 1/2 teaspoons dried marjoram 1 teaspoon dried thyme 3/4 pound fresh shiitake mushrooms, stems discarded, caps coarsely chopped 3/4 pound crimini mushrooms, stems trimmed, caps coarsely chopped 1 1/2 teaspoons salt 8 cups 1/2-inch pieces crustless country-style white bread (about 1 pound) 1/2 cup finely chopped fresh Italian parsley 2 eggs, beaten to blend ++Bring 2 cups chicken broth to boil in small saucepan. Add porcini mushrooms. Cover and remove from heat. Let stand 30 minutes to soften porcini mushrooms. Using slotted spoon, transfer porcini to work surface. Finely chop porcini. Save liquid to add to your gravy. Preheat oven to 400°F. Butter 13x9x2-inch baking dish. Melt 6 tablespoons butter in heavy large pot over medium heat. Add porcini, chopped onions, celery, marjoram and thyme. Cover and cook 10 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add shiitake, crimini and 1 teaspoon salt. Cover and cook until mushrooms begin to release their liquid, stirring occasionally, about 5 minutes. Increase heat to medium-high. Uncover and cook until almost all liquid evaporates and mushrooms brown lightly, stirring frequently, about 8 minutes. Transfer mushroom mixture to large bowl. (Mushroom mixture can be prepared 1 day ahead. Cover and refrigerate.) Add bread, chopped fresh parsley, remaining 1 1/4 cups chicken broth and 1/2 teaspoon salt to mushroom mixture and stir to blend. Season with pepper. Mix in eggs. Transfer dressing to prepared dish. Cover with aluminum foil. Bake 20 minutes. Uncover and bake until light brown, about 20 minutes.

I'll remember that. I was just thinking about this and was using "Better than Bouillon" or something like that to make some soup. Chicken broths sure can vary, so it's important to get a good one.

No Costco here :-( but I've been using Better Than Bullion beef and chicken low sodium and love it, with the side benefit no more stacks of cans in wait of becoming soup!

I have been buying it for months here in Ontario but my last visit - it wasn't ....stocked. Sorry, had to do it! Really though, I liked it and was disappointed it wasn't there.

Cookie, that's what I'm afraid of.....they won't have it when I want it next. I've only seen it a couple of times, they usually only carry Campbell's.

Products come and go at Costco, that seems to be the practice. Even with house label (Kirkland) items.

Yeah Snidely, hubby is so ticked, he's bought Kirkland brand t-shirts and underwear for several years, and we're seeing that the Kirkland brand is disappearing in favour of Tommy Hilfigger

That suggests they were able to negotiate a price with Tommy H that gives them a better margin than what they had with the private label manufacturer. You see new products that get introduced and soon disappear, presumably because they didn't meet sales expectations.

Notwithstanding the size of its warehouses, Costco's MO is to carry a limited number of items people want to buy. You don't necessarily find selection within a category or a choice of brands. They offer items for each category they want to have, hope the choices sell, well, and change what they offer when they think a different choice would do better or if they get a better price from another supplier. Having Costco as an outlet is a choice customer for a product producer, most are willing to give them favorable pricing to win the account. .
