Need help with wireless router trouble

Win 7

My husband and I used to have a cable modem connected to a Netgear WiFi router. We didn't connect our computers over a home network so that if one of them got infected, the other would still be clean. My computer uses WiFi, and his, an Ethernet cable to connect to the Internet.

This is our problem. We recently bought a new modem/router with WiFi capabilities, Surfboard SBG 6580, and it is working fine. I put a new password on it and everything. But the "Netgear Genie" still apparently thinks it is in control, and although my original Netgear connection has disappeared, I have gotten the following message from it:

"Netgear router is not found or is not supported. Also make sure the device is not connected to the guest network of the router and no IPv6 is enabled." This makes me feel uneasy. Of course, since the old router has been replaced, I presume that nothing I do over WiFi is any longer in danger of being leaked through it.

(1) But why or how has Netgear, which originally came with our previous router ended up still in charge? The genie does list the name of the new WiFi connection I have established, with a new password.

(2) Should I keep things the way they are or try to get rid of this Netgear Genie (which I can't figure out how to do, as it is not listed among the programs in the Control Panel)?

(3) Shouldn't our new Surfboard modem/router have some sort of control that would be working instead of Netgear Genie?

Any suggestions appreciated. If it makes no difference to security, I wouldn't mind just letting this genie carry on as is.
