Comments (3)I'm excited to hear him speak. I've bought orchids from him several times and they always do well for me. I bought several Brassia species from him at the recent Tamiami show. I have them in baskets w/coconut fiber and I've now got roots all over the place. (Hopefully, the flowers will follow). Tim....See MoreNorth FL garden plants
Comments (7)Hi Bea, I live in Jacksonville, too. In my area of the city (Southside - almost the exact midpoint between the Atlantic Ocean and the St. Johns River), we have two or three hard freezes with a duration of 12+ hours every winter. I know there are other areas of town that aren't as severe, and yeah, I'm jealous. :) I struggle with the same thing - many of my plants freeze back to the ground. But I love my tropicals, so I do three things to work with them here in northeast Florida. First, I have many in pots, and yeah, I do the pot-dragging into the garage, house and screened-in porch: in, out, in, out. Second, I have most of my in-ground tropicals in the back yard. That way, the big brown mess is mostly only back there. I cover them with large plastic trash cans, empty pots or blankets. As their root systems have become more established and larger, they rebound more quickly each spring. Third, I have planted more and more trees to develop a canopy which makes a huge difference in the overnight temps for plants beneath them. Most of the plants under my live oaks and southern magnolia will come through a hard freeze unscathed while the same plant, fifteen feet away won't be seen again until late March! Comments (20)Soooo, does anyone in zone 9a use a cold frame to grow veggies and such in the winter? I hate that we can't grow stuff year around. The winter is too cold for a lot of things that people can grow in S. FL without protection and then the summer is too hot and rains so much (Jax area) that everything get fungus and I don't spray. So we do seem to have a shorter growing season unless we use some artificial means of protection. I have been thinking of making some cold frames. I have a greenhouse for stuff but it is usually crammed with my tropical plants and no real room for seedlings and such. I came from a zone 10 (last place I lived anyways, lol) so I am a little spoiled to being able to grow more stuff in the winter. I do like having just one FL forum because everyone can provide something of value and we all learn from one another. I plan to move further south in a few years so it helps me prepare lol. I don't even care if non Floridians post here as long as they aren't trolling, heck I posted on this forum before I moved here because I am really into tropical plants and the tropicals forum is dead most of the time lol. ~SJN...See MoreCalling all N.FL. & Central FL rebels!
Comments (40)Here are a couple of cycads in a greenhouse I haven't shown yet. The The first one is an Encephalartos gratus from Mozambique in a 45 gallon container that has about 30 inches of trunk. The last plant is an E. ferox, tubular form female in a 90 gallon container. If anyone ever does buy this plant, I'm not sure how I will move it. But I will figure that out if the time comes. I'd probably have to rent a bobcat with forks on it. The picture really doesn't show that is is 10 feet across. This second picture just shows all kinds of different cycads. Looks like a cycad jungle....See Morejeci1974
