I got 10 a couple months ago. It's different but not too bad. Like someone came in your house and rearranged your drawers. Over time, you find everything. If you get stuck, you can google your question, ask Raven, or go to landzdown.com where they are happy to help you.

It has been highly suggested to fully remove any Antivirus software first and any other security software. I would Google that question before going ahead and see what other recommendations there are.

What is the advantage of Windows 10?

Thanks all. Glenda, my thought is that I just got a new comp with windows 8 and that does not seem too bad so might as well download 10 while it is still free. My thinking is that I am 64 and by the time I HAVE to have 10 I may be too "not wanting or able to learn it. LOL

I downloaded it and so far have no problems, but I'm only in facebook and a few other sites. I suggested my DH not to download it because then he would be asking me too many questions on where everything is. So he's good with the old one.

glenda, you'll recall that Microsoft had a PR nightmare and a user revolt when Win 8 was released. Rather than fix Win 8 substantially, their solution was to stop work on 8 and implement the changes people wanted and call it Win 10.

Active development on 8 has stopped and they want to move as many people along to Win 10 as quickly as possible. That's why the free upgrade is offered. In return, you get a few more years of active and extended support. See attached link.

Windows Lifecycle dates

I wish I had waited to download it until all the kinks were fixed. Since downloading Windows 10 my wifi always keeps disconnecting. At first it was every 10 minutes or so, was good for a few weeks and now I am having trouble staying connected to my wifi. I have rebooted my modem a few times, but it still happens. This is a known issue with Windows 10, connectivity to wifi. I was happy with Windows 8.1, I should have stayed with it.

I downloaded Windows 10, but soon discovered that my husband, who has some age-related forgetfulness, refused to try to learn it. He said he just wouldn't get on the computer, anymore. Since it's very important for him to keep doing the things he can, like getting on line and reading his home town newspaper, my daughter uninstalled Windows 10 for us and re-installed Windows 7. What I'm afraid will happen is that sooner or later, Windows 7 may not work and then I'll have the learning curve of Windows 10 or whatever else is being used.

I really didn't notice that big of a difference from Windows 8.1.

I have and older desktop running XP; A newer desktop with Windows 7 professional 64 bit; and a new laptop.

XP: I liked this version. I could be productive with it and was comfortable with how to use it. Upgrades and support has run out. Its main limitation is the addressable size of a disk and logical disk. This computer has two hard drives and each drive is divided into 4 logical drives. I would have used fewer logicals except that I hit the addressing limit and had to make more logicals to get full use of the disk.

The computer is slow to boot up - probably needs a rebuild with improved hardware. It is getting slow to respond to many sites. I kept it to run legacy software that will not run in the newer operating systems.

This computer is great; The operating system stinks. Its ok for smart phones and Ipads, but compared to the earlier system, it is not easy to use and is not productive. For example, the word processor changed everything in the user interface and is harder to use than before. This was totally unnecessary. The prior version was very good and useful. Too many things are 'hidden' and requires a tricky, non-intuitive input to to get a function to appear. They needlessly changed the names of many functions.

The computer was a sale special and pre-loaded with Windows 8.1. Version 8.1 fixed several issues found in version 8. I took the computer on a 2000 mile trip and tried to become aquainted with it. I was constantly pestered to upgrade to Windows 10. One threat was the free upgrade period would run out and after that, the upgrade would have to be purchased.

After coming home, I did the update to 10. It took a very long time to down load and install. After installation, I found that the recovery backup for OldWindows operating system used up most of the recovery space allocated on the hard drive; Only 3 GB remained. I needed to have increased this partition. That should have been done before the install. There was plenty of space on the hard drive to have done this.

Windows 10

Windows 10 does boot up a little faster than 8.1. The remaining interface is much the same as 8.1 with the same complaints. Both Windows 8.1 and 10 boot faster Windows 7.

I am using Norton Security for anti-virus and general protection and housekeeping (10 device version). Norton has updated the software sold in January to run on Windows 8 and 10. I had no problem installing the January version and it is performing well with Win 10.

Am I happy with Win 10 - No. I wish I could install a user interface skin that emulates Win 7 Professional. I am a keyboard & mouse guy. I chose this particular laptop because it had a CD/DVD drive and 3 USB ports. Optical drives are being eliminated on most laptops these days.

(Two years ago, I was warned in a genealogy class to move archival data off CDs and on to DVDs. It was the instructor's view that CDs will disappear in the near future. The trend is to stop making CDs and CD read/write drives.) I hope she was wrong; I fear she was correct.

Cherryfizz, I had the same wifi problem. I found a solution that has been working for me so far. If you will locate your wifi driver (network adapter) in your device manager, right click and uninstall it, then re-boot your PC. Windows will automatically install a valid network adapter file (you'll see it updating) and you should have a more stable wifi connection once you sign onto your wifi again.

I forgot to say to the original poster that I agree that you should uninstall any anti-virus, anti-spyware, etc. before you update. I learned that lesson the hard way.

Jemdandy you won't have that problem with the windows old file very long, it will be automatically deleted after the period of time that they allowed for going back should you wish too. Around 30 days I think, might be more. So if you want to keep it you better back it up to another drive before it goes away. But you will have your space back on your hard drive once it's deleted.

Thanks for the information. I won't be going back to Win 8 since Win 10 works a tad better and there is not much difference in the human interface between the two.
