Are bromeliads 'Poisonous'?
Comments (31)I've read all the comments. My Bromeliads have never had anything applied to them. Nothing but rainwater. I divided a cluster of them for transplanting. I knew I was scratched up, but I had no idea that it would get so much worse throughout the evening. When we work outside in the Florida heat, we get into our salt water pool as soon as we quit working. You would think that would have helped. But it did not. The welts were flame red and warm to the touch. Itch, burning, just miserable. Here is what my arms looked like...keep in mind that the color in the photo is not accurate. It was much more vivid red and swollen. I am not allergic to anything like latex, pineapples, etc. This took me by surprise......See MoreWBC 08, Cairns - Part 2 - The Report
Comments (10)Thanks for the positive comments, brom friends. Glad you enjoyed it - just sorry you weren't all there. LOL, Andrew, that 100% pay rise sounds good, but my maths is poor - what is 100% of $0? The alien hieroglyphics were most annoying. I now know that one should change the file to text only, when copying and pasting a Word document. The hieroglyphics substituted all the inverted commas, apostrophes, and dots...... which did not show in the preview. Lisa - I know nothing about why there weren't more Aussie hybrids available for sale. Probably distance to get them there would have been a hindrance. Shane Z was selling some of his hybrids, as was Peter T. I can only assume that due to restrictions on O.S. visitors' purchases, the sellers catered more for Aussies - the majority. And yes Gonzer, a splendid time was had for sure! Cheers, Kerry...See MoreHelp me save my Bromeliad!
Comments (3)Hi everyone. Adicresce - Your plant is a Guzmania and by the looks of it, it's getting burnt by either too much sun or some sort of chemical; either way it's being "cooked". These plants like it shadier than many other brom's so best move it so it isn't near a window or anywhere it's getting direct sun. They like reasonable light but NOT DIRECT SUN. It's looking pretty sick right now and to give it a fighting chance, I would cut off the old flower spike as it's now in decline anyway and while ever it's attached, it's drawing nourishment from the plant. Once removed you may find it will start to produce one or two little pups from around the base. Because of the condition of the plant, I would suggest you don't remove them as they grow, just leave them alone and the old Mother plant will eventually die away and hopefully you'll have a nice healthy pup or pups to take its place. Below is a link to an article about basic Guzmania care which you may find helpful. http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/houseplants/bromeliad/growing-guzmania-bromeliads.htm All the best, Nev....See MoreStupid Lubber Grasshoppers
Comments (8)Wow! What a population... Please try Nolo bait next year. It is a bran mixture (the nymphs would rather eat bran than anything!) which is infected with a protozoa. When they eat the protozoa, they stop eating and die after a short while. Did you know the nymphs are cannibalistic? When they eat an infected one they get the proto too. Best of all.. any who survive into adulthood will pass the proto on to the next generations. It has been COMMONLY known to eradicate them for years!!! The bait must be ordered early in the spring and stored in your fridge. Place bottle caps full, a tablespoon or so, each place you see a nest hatching. Places such as Scotts in Tampa will have it most years but it sells out quick. Because it is a little pricey, try to convince a neighbor to go in with you. That way, they will be treating for them too and you will benefit....See Moredangermouse01 (coastal central FL 9B)
