Miniature Garden advice needed

I just planted a mini-garden on a whim in an old bonsai pot, about
7"x5"x2" deep. I put in a layer of small gravel, a layer of charcoal,
and then planted three plants in potting soil on top. Then I put Spanish
moss on top.

The plants are designed for mini-gardens. I have two pixie hypoestes and
one pixie peperomia puteolata. I watered with three T of water, and
plan to do this maybe every other day.

Question 1: Is there anything I need to do to keep them small, less than 6" high?

Question 2: Should I fertilise, and if so, with what?

Question 3: These will be indoor plants. I can put them in a window that
gets bright light for about three hours. Is that enough? Is artificial
lamp light from an over head LED spotlight as good?

Question 4: Am I doing anything else wrong?

Eleanor, I'm replying more as a bump (to the top of the forum for members to see) than because I have anything particularly helpful to offer.

I grow quite a few Peperomia and thanks to gifts that friends have brought over, I've grown a two or three Hypoestes--grown, past tense, being the operative word. :-) Well, grown would actually be an overstatement...

I don't think the two have similar water needs, not that I ever figured out what the H actually wants. Treating it like Peperomia (basically as a succulent) doesn't work; treating it like a fern (flooding) doesn't work. They go from cute to hideous practically overnight a few weeks into the game for me.

Light-wise, they should be similar, both liking indirect bright light, but again, not that I really have any clue what light the H wanted before they croaked. lol

I presume your pot has drainage holes? I'm not sure why you layered the soil like a terrarium when, well, it's not a terrarium but perhaps drainage is the reason? If there are no holes, that isn't going to end well.

Keeping it small and fertilizing go against each other in my mind, but I know nothing about bonsai and plants need nutrients, so....Al (tapla) is our bonsai master, and he can assuredly tell you how to fertilize but keep it from growing large. I'd imagine it's a matter of letting it grow and pruning it to shape and ohhhh, believe you me, the H didn't like that either, haha.

Joanne, i actually happened upon that grid thing by accident, at value village - it looked the right size for my plant tray, so i spent a whole dollar on it ;-p it's 1/5" thick and about 1" short of filling the tray on either side, but works like a charm... there is no brand name on it, even though it came packaged. I was debating checking the hydroponics store, there are a few things i am putting on a list to buy from there, that way, if they don't have something, i am still not entirely wasting their time. i've checked and the grids everybody else appears to be using are available at places like lowes etc. they are named something different in each store, egg crate, light grid, etc. the ones i found are made by plaskolite and come in 2x4' sheets. online typically in the ceiling panel section, and $15CAD, so probably about ten USD. There are various versions, so you need to read the descriptions to find the ones that actually are a grid. I have yet to find it in store though - i have strolled through on numerous occasions, but never come prepared with product # (or money - i leave my wallet in the car so i have to think twice before buying stuff i don't actually need). I'll post some pics of the show last weekend - i took lots of pictures of the dish gardens and designs. never noticed them last year....

I am far from being an expert but I can tell you what everyone told me when I brought home my first gift rose. Get it outside!!! There are very few people who can keep a rose alive inside. Your home is way too dry for a rose. Put in dappled shade for the first couple of days then slowly move it into more sun. A rose needs 6 hours of sun a day to grow. Make sure you keep it well watered but don't put a tray under it, the water must be able to drain out the bottom of the pot. You want the dirt to stay slightly moist. There are actually probably 3-4 roses in that pot. Whether or not to try and separate them is up to you. You will find many people who will tell you on each side of the do/not do fence. It all depends on your current soil conditions and how big the garden is. A vegetable garden doesn't have to be tilled or plowed every year. If it has grass on it, the biggest job will be breaking that up. If the soil is poor - low in organic matter - you'll want to incorporate a lot of compost up front and more each year to maintain the levels and build a better soil. Sounds like you are ready to do that. I had my garden plot initially tilled by a guy with a tractor, not sure of the size (of the tractor) but it was finely broken up (tilled) rather than plowed. I would recommend a tiller rather than a plow for gardening. I don't know of any rock-removing implement. Your own two hands is pretty much it. If you pick a spot to toss them into a pile and do that whenever you see them, over time there will be fewer and fewer. I keep a small pot in the corner of each raised bed for rock pieces - mine are gravel about 1-2" across and there are not many at this point. Re planting, you don't HAVE to plant in rows. You probably do want to establish some paths to walk on and beds that you don't walk on. If you plant tomatoes, peppers or other plants that are not grown from seed, you can plant them in a grid rather than rows. You might want to start small with one bed rather than a huge area the first year. Expand it each year as you have time and materials.

I'd say that your plant looks fine, ... though you likely should have left it in the 2 1/2" pot. The leaves look like they might have a natural waviness. I definitely wouldn't remove leaves at this point.
