Daughter needs help with picking sofas for apartment
Comments (28)Sofas can be larger in a small room. But what I found is the arms are what cause an overscale. This was the first thing I looked at, those arms are going to take up more room than expected, losing close to 6" on each side. The more detail there is will also cause a sofa to appear larger than what is usable sitting space. The idea of two sofas in a room is great. Would love to do this if my room would work. Agree with Julie, she might want to wait for a move. So many layouts could change. Perhaps you could suggest using masking tape to layout the size of sofas. It will at least give an idea as to how much room they take up. Or photoshop as one suggested. Also, I see the EC as a great storage for office or bedroom. Add shelves or a pole for clothes. Know they are big, but like that one. I suspect she is going to make up her own mind and credit to you for not intruding. Wouldn't surprise me if she just went and bought one when you weren't looking. Given the style she is interested in, she must have a vision of what her room and style is. The ornate sofa says something about her interest beyond what she currently has. Or perhaps she has a friend who redid a room and wants the same. She might have fun at Houzz and you may see what it is she likes. Plus make you want to do something you had no plans for. I can get into areas not thought of before looking at all the designs. It is a great site. Comments (4)I don't know.... Most homemade potting soil mixes are complicated and expensive enough to make you wish you went to the store and bought some. Priced a bag of perlite or vermiculite lately? I mostly improvise. I had a real successful fig mix by mixing peat moss roughly 50-50 with fine screened (1/4 inch) compost. It's just exploding this year. I've also riffed on the "gritty mix" formula by adding diatomaceous earth sweeping compound I got at the auto parts store. (Use respiratory protection!). One thing about my homemade stuff is that it's a lot more durable than store bought potting mix. The stuff is usually better the second year than the first. Don't mix it with garden soil but don't sweat it too much either. I'm like you, though. Spending lots of money on bags of this and that is not where it's at. I try and keep my bag purchases to commodity type things....See MoreI need some help making my first potting mix please
Comments (0)I would like to make my own potting mix this season, but I'm very new to this and could use a little help please. I estimate I need about 8 cubic feet (50 gallons) to do all the flower boxes and planters. The flowers will mostly be petunia and begonia this year, but some others too. Can someone please share a recipe to make a potting soil that would work well for my application. And any tips that you could share to help me make this the first time. Thank you!...See MoreI need help arranging my tiny, awkward apartment
Comments (26)The futon needs to go. And I wouldn't add more chairs. When you have occasional guests, use the dining chairs. Or maybe you have a chair in the bedroom that you can bring in. We really need measurements of the space to make decent recommendations on placement of furniture. You can see the space but it's very difficult for us work from photos. I have some ideas but don't know if they would work e.g. could the cabinet go where the couch is now, i.e. facing the wall where the futon is now. I really like the fish tanks but you're not showing them to best advantage. They would look better together and I think the only place that works is on the cabinet (wherever that ends up in your plan). Put them straight, not angled - they look oddly tippy at an angle. Find a drawer or pretty box/basket to put the fish food etc. so the attention is on the fish, not on those not-that-attractive items. Put a wall shelf or hooks or wall-hung basket near your front door so keys etc are not cluttering the space. The lights around the window and wall are not attractive. Sorry but a bit teenage. I'd remove them Your green couch should go where your futon is now. Now as far as your wall art. I'll assume you want to work with what you have. Your largest pieces of art work should go on the couch wall which is now bare. Probably you need to put 2 pieces side by side, because their combined width should be about 2/3 of the width of the sofa. Maybe the ones on the refrigerator wall, or the piece that is now over the fish tank? The bottom should be hung about 6-10" above the back of the sofa. Once you have decided where the rest of the furniture goes, come back and we'll help you with the rest of the art. Your art is hung too high. The middle of any "arrangement" should be 60" from the floor, unless it's over a piece of furniture that makes this impossible. Your arrangements are also spaced too far apart. Small walls, like those on either side of your window, usually look better without anything, and the art concentrated on larger walls....See MoreRelated Professionals
