Aloe cameronii in very dry conditions in L. A.?

Hi: I am putting in a very dry landscape (no watering once-established) east of Los Angeles, and want to feature succulents that turn color under stress. Design-wise I like Aloe cameronii but I'm concerned in comparison to its native environment conditions will be too harsh and it'll sunburn badly. The garden is a pilot project and it's important for it to be successful.

Should I just stick with the very dry growers like Aloe microstigma or does anyone have experience with dry-grown cameronii in inland soCal?
