Question about flat irons

My hair is longer than this and I normally use a big round brush/blow dryer to flip the bottom up and add volume to the top layer. I have to use hot heat and then switch the blow dryer to cool air to set it. I saw the CHI styler on QVC and decided to try out my son's flat iron, which didn't work anything like the one on QVC. I'm wondering if there's really a difference in a higher quality iron or if they more than likely used some type of product to help hold the curl? If so, do you know of a good product? I'm thinking I could use the same type of product with my brush and blow dryer. I'm willing to spend the money on the CHI if it really makes a difference, but I'm skeptical.

I could have used that in 1963. It's exactly what my hair looked like, except the blonde part, after a night spent sleeping on rollers.

I thought a flat iron is supposed to make your hair straight. I never got that much curl with a curling iron. Am I missing something here?

Question: why do you think your lawn needs iron? Has it given you some indictation it needs such. Any complete fertilizer will have the trace elements that lawns benefit from. The zinc, molebdymum (sp), et al, includes iron. The package of lawn fertilizer will say what it contains and if it doesn't stipulate it has the trace element 'iron' in it, then pick another bag. When you fool around with elements that your lawn and soil do not need, many times what happens is you come crying back for advice about "whot happend"... The only sure way to tell if your soil needs iron is to get a soil test. Such tests are commonly done by nurseries, garden centers, extension services provided by many STATE universities and or agricultural colleges. A state university is one that is supported by the state government and is not privately governed. There are other methods to give your lawn 'iron' if it so needs it. Packages of chelated iron are found on shelves everywhere and directions for use is given. Iron is not specifically for "greening" up a lawn...actually, nitrogen does a pretty good job of doing this when given in early spring. Nitrogen, when given in too much volume, can cause problems by lowering the pH too much to the acidic side and often people make a habit of giving their lawn some lime to counteract high nitrogen readings. Generally, most people who do give their lawns lime do not harm it any way---the lawn can accept the amounts of lime without causing undo harm. Only by getting a soil test can one be assured they are doing right by their lawns.

Well, I guess no one grows this plant. I had not heard of it until I received a free packet of seed from T&M two years ago. I really like the plant so far, but it has not behaved according to explanations of what to expect that I have read online. It was supposed to bloom until fall, it was supposed to not bloom until August and it started in late May and is almost done blooming. It does look like the photos of it. Easy to start from seed and came through the winter fine and has managed to still look good after this horrible summer weather this year. A few of the taller stocks have gone over in all the storms, but everything still looks good and the shorter stalks are upright.

Whatever amendment product you decide to use (Espoma Soil Acidifier, Aluminum Sulfate or Iron Chelate in Liquid form 2.5%) is fine. Just stick with that one product to correct iron chlorosis and apply it as recommended in the label. I notice that dry/powdered products take a while longer to produce results than liquid ones but either will correct the problem for a while. Reapply it as stated on the label. Using two amendment products at the same time may be risky; consider that they both usually contain sulphur and that sulphur can burn roots if you apply too much. Less is more when talking about these amendments. Liquid Miracle Gro Fertilizer and one of these amendment products can be safely used together. Just aply it per label directions, which may differ of course.

I think there is a difference, mostly regarding temperature and how well the iron grips/pulls the hair. I use mine to curl my bangs under just a smidge. You need a pretty small iron for that. Maybe 3/4 or 1 inch. I have a 3" to actually straighten my hair. Also, you should check out TJ Maxx, they often have CHI.

I can't answer the flat iron question, but can recommend a mousse for volume. I have a bit of wave in my hair and usually just blow dry and use my fingers, round brush when longer. I have been using Kenra (brand) Platinum thickening mousse. It does a great job with volume and doesn't feel like glue. My hair isn't oily so I don't have to wash daily, but because of bad bedhead, I do have to at least wet and blow dry daily. With this I can do that and not need more mousse until I wash again.

Yes and no. I had a CHI (not adjustable temp) for a long time and really liked it. Of course, it died the day my hair was cut to a pixie. I needed another flat iron - right - now - and the closest stores didn't have high end ones so I grabbed an Andis 1" ceramic iron. It's adjustable temp (I leave it on high and my hair isn't damanged, ymmv) and the same size as my CHI. I figured if it was terrible I'd replace it. It works the same and is great. No need to buy something more expensive. That said, my sister has a inexpensive flat iron, adjustable heat and all, I think is terrible. (Con Air I believe) If what you're doing works for you, why did you want to switch? Were you looking for something faster? I use mousse on my hair, but I can get it to curl without while using a flat iron. For the look I want, the hold is better with product. I currently curl my hair with one.

Joanie - You can actually straighten or curl your hair with one. If your hair is longer it gives a different look than a curling iron.

SheelsBack - In the demonstration, the CHI adds more volume and curl than my brush/blow dryer, so that's the only reason I would consider switching.

lizbeth - Does the mouse just add body or does it help hold a curl?

I use a GHD flat iron to curl my hair. I find it easier to manuever than a curling iron. I watched a couple of those videos & they do give you some good tips about how to angle the flat iron to get a certain type of wave. I use a mousse also & it does help hold a curl/wave & add body. I've never had much luck styling my hair with a brush/blow dryer - lack of coordination?

my DD#1 gave me a flat iron for Christmas, and she and GD#1 insist that it can curl, too. Can never get my hair to do that with the flat iron, though. Either crappy technique or my hair texture.
