Windows Live Mail no longer recognizes my default Gmail account

Windows 7 computer, Chrome default browser, Windows Live Mail 12. I have three Gmail accounts, all configured to be downloaded to my computer via Windows Live Mail 12. This has worked perfectly for many months. About a week ago, my default account would not receive or send from WLM, asking repeatedly for my password. The password is correct, and I have no problem at all with my smart phone or my tablet. But for some reason, Gmail does not recognize my Windows as a valid device, but only for this one account. Any ideas as to what is causing this or what I could do to remedy it?

I did get my gmail account to work in WLM, but not the way I had hoped. What I finally did was activate the 2 step verification, and chose my Windows computer as the "app" to be used. Gmail send me a verification code, and then a 16 digit password, with a space after each 4 digits, to use when asked by WLM for my password. After entering the 16 digit password, all my mail for the past six days downloaded in WLM. Instructions were that I would never need to enter this password again, but I did write it down in my little password book, just in case.

What I find puzzling is that I have used WLM 12 for almost three years with the same three gmail accounts, all of which worked in the mail program. It was only on Sept. 27 that my default account stopped working and asked repeatedly for my password. At that point I had NOT done the 2 step verification, so this is very infuriating, Google! I was forced into the 2 step verification process to get gmail to recognize my computer as an approved "app".

eandhl, I have Charter for a ISP. I don't like their email either. Neither the old or the new version. It is slow and too hard to see. As far as I can tell you can't adjust font size yet. I've been messing with this for the past couple of weeks and this is what I found out. I can't remember exactly how I accomplished this, but look around and see if you can stumble onto the answers. Or post back if you don't find it and I will try to again. The default seems to be to not keep sent messages in the sent folder. You can change that by clicking on the Preferences tab near the top on the blue line. then place a check mark in the box that says Save Outgoing Messages. Works for me, anyway. I don't know why you are getting an error message. when your messages disappeared from charter email, did they show up in live mail? That is the way it is set up by charter. Please excuse my lack of the correct terminology. Your email will show in charter email as long as live mail is not open, (or Outlook express, etc) When I open OE, all the emails sweep out of charter and into OE. A problem if you are traveling, and someone else is at home. The traveler can't see the emails if the person at home opens the receiving account i.e. OE. That's why live mail or gmail is nice. you can access anywhere. On my win7 laptop, I use a Gmail account, with the Charter set to forward into it. I don't remember exactly how I did that, but it must have been easy. Maybe Zep's link would show how to do it. Hope this makes a little bit of sense. Post back with any questions. Janette

camp, I really do NOT like gmail but have to use it to access the mail accounts I have that I used to access smoothly via Outlook Express on WinXP. With dialup, I have to wait for ever for gmail to load and be able to open my mail. I think you answered my first part OK. Thanks. I assume if I DL'd and installed WLM, it would ask at the time if I would want it to be my default mail then. BUT-----Would that only be for on this computer or affect my other computer and make it default also automatically?

urlee Apparently my default mail is Windstream. Windstream is my ISP and has been for several years. I will go to their web site and try to change that. No, leave that as is. My ISP is my default mail too! When you downloaded WLM, did you have to enter info from your server like incoming pop3, and outgoing smtp? I am guessing that is what makes WLM work as default to my knowledge. because when the Windows Live software was downloaded, what I got was a Hot Mail address Are you sure you downloaded WLM for Win7 and NOT the Hotmail one?. If so, then it looks like your hotmail one went default on you like it did me automatically before.

grandms, I think that was the answer I was looking for. But keep in mind that the e-mails that you get on Windows Live Mail will not download to OE also. I do know that if you are in a certain mail account when you are receiving mail, it lands at the account you have open provided you have those accounts allowed in and you can not get them again. Example: If I was in Windows Live Hotmail and mail is coming in, when I close out and go to OE, the mail that came in while WLH was open to receive them, those mails will not show up in OE then as they would have had I not had WLH mail open. But, I am assuming Windows Live Mail will not associate with OE at all from what DA posted? (Thanks DA for your time spent. Didn't mean for you to have to do that) Thank you too RC, will go back and check your url out. I am afraid to open my Hotmail account because of that incident I had (don't trust hotmail) and tried to change that addy to gmail here for Garden Web but GW won't let me so I may be missing email replies to me if sent there from here.

Windows up date maybe broke something. I'm not sure....

gmail seems to do that for me every few years, it just suddenly decides that my correctly typed password is incorrect.

edited to add that I use the webmail version of gmail in Firefox.

Recently had some problems with a Friends computer
and it asking me for the Password (Over and Over). I did have to enter a
Verification Code that Microsoft wanted before I could get the email working
again. Problem was that her Email wasn't working so I couldn't get the Code to
Enter for the Verification! Finally got ahold of this woman and she had forgotten
she changed the password to her Email Account. Once I got to her Email I was
able to retrieve the Verification Code (there were 13 requests). Everything is
working now!

Grandms problem sounded a lot like this woman's
computer problem. The link I supplied to Grandms at another Forum gave Grandms
the info she needed to correct her problem too, even though Grandms uses Gmail
and this other woman uses AOL. This woman's computer I worked on, turned out to
be a problem with a Microsoft Verification, I’m betting Grandms's problem was
with Microsoft Verification too!
