Making AOL E-mail As Default

Dell 4600 desktop 2003/xp3/ie7/avg/1.2ram. Howdy. I got my first computer in February, 1990. Guess they're built to make us old guys keep using them neurons (sp?).

Anyway, in the Internet Properties/Programs tab it lists the following: Corel Central mail; Juno; MSN Explorer; Outlook Express; Windows Live Mail. It doesn't allow for adding or removing.

I've been on Juno e-mail for fifteen years, I guess. Six months ago I got an AOL e-mail address. For the time being I wish to have AOL as my default e-mail provider. I've been Googling for two hours and still have not come up with how. Any help appreciated. Thanks, Gene

How are you accessing your AOL mail account? Via Internet Explorer (or whatever browser you use) or via AOL's software?

Howdy. Thanks for asking. I access the Internet through Charter. It had never entered my mind as how I was accessing AOL. I've guessed all along it has been via IE. At the beginning I went to Google. I typed in the typical http etc and then, AOL.COM. When it came up I clicked their free e-mail site. The rest is history.

As a follow up on my first post I found a link allowing me to bring any e-mail sites to AOL. They said it takes 24 hrs to complete. Problem is - I still don't know how to set AOL as my default e-mail site. Thanks.

long time lurker, very rarely a poster. please don't hold that against me. I've read several posts similar to this one and I don't understand what all the fuss is about. If I wanted to reply to a Craigslist email, I could do it in about 6 seconds with a few mouse clicks and not have to make any changes to the browser at all, nor would I need to install any type of a plug-in that might not be supported the next time the browser gets updated. Right-click the Craigslist email address Select Copy E-Mail Address with a left-click Open a new Tab-go to your AOL EMail Click Compose Right-click in the To: field and left--click to PASTE the email address you just copied a moment ago. What could be easier? Sometimes the problems encountered by users wanting to make everything work with one click are better solved by using what is already available to you. It's not that hard, and you just might learn something useful along the way.

I would agree with the previous assessment. Try a different email address. If you don't have one, you can get free email accounts from Gmail, Hotmail, Yahoo, etc.

Kath, glad you got your email back. About Firefox 10.0.2. Is that what you had, or did you update it along with Thunderbird? Wondering what caused your problem. I don't know whether to get the update or not. I'm sure Alex will do well on the test. OJ, I had that same problem with Gmail. I use Yahoo now. There is a definite Love-Hate relationship with our computers. Sue

In the context you are referring to, there isn't a "default" email program when you use Internet Explorer (or any other browser) to access your email. You could, set up, Outlook Express to access your AOL account and then use that as your default email program.

If you want free email, Gmail (from Google) works pretty darn well. If you would ever buy an Android phone, integration would be seamless.

I second Mike's suggestion about Gmail. I have mine configured so that instead of using a browser such as IE for getting my mail, it comes into Outlook Express right on my desktop. In fact, I have two Gmail accounts in my name and one for my husband, and they all come via OE. Much easier than having to use a browser. One of the accounts is my default, but the others still come into OE automatically. Directions for doing this on found on Gmail.

Just browsing around tonight and noticed there were computer forums here. I use AOL thought I would tell you it can be done as I have tried this and it works fine. Read the link I posted and it will tell you what program to download. It's for gmail but when you install it you will have the option to pick AOL from the list. and that's it.

Then when you are online and click somewhere to email a site it will bring up a filled in AOL mail form from aol.com. I am guessing though you have to make sure you leave aol.com logged in all the time and do not sign out.

I was helping someone once make yahoo.com the default mail in firefox by using the malto code or what ever it is and stumbled upon this so thought I would try it and file it away for reference in case someone needed to know that. Mary
