I read the Hunger Games and my daughter told me the Divergent series is even better. She is now reading The Maze Runner series that you might like. She also read Pretty Little Liars but that has been a long time ago.

Divergent series is good. A little obvious in places, but well written.

I've enjoyed quite a few YA books recently, too. I get tired of the same dystopian depopulation setup, but it seems to be in the zeitgeist. I haven't read The Maze Runner series but it's supposed to be good, if much the same, in its way, as Divergent.

The Lorian Legacies, one of those series where the author name is part of the fiction, is also well written, and not dystopian, though it's better at the beginning where the world outside the characters is part of the story. There are many books and digital side stories. I've read more than half.

I read one YA series because the kids were, The Lying Game, and I wanted to take a blue pencil to it, like a 10th grade English teacher. That's about the level of quality of the prose. OTOH, while the conceit is ludicrous and the plot contrived, the pacing and page-turning-ness were actually quite good. If the author had had a decent editor, these could have been good books.

That aside, most of the YAs I've read have been much better written, and better told, than a lot of new fiction aimed at adults. I guess the YA authors know that their audience will walk away if a book is boring or bad and spread the word. One presumes that authors aiming at grown up readers figure they've already made their buck if you've bought the book, and few people return a book because the content is subpar. Considering that the teens/young adults who were reading the lot that we've been talking about from the beginning are mostly full adults now, and still likely not to pick up a bad by reputation book and, if suckered into reading part, are likely to post about how bad it is all over, you'd think that publishers would be anxious to put out better written and edited books rather than than the twaddle I see so much of.

James Patterson's Maximum Ride. Genetically engineered kids. It was a well written series. Fang was the last one I read.

The Lorian Legacies....it was OK. I liked the movie, "I am number four".

The Percy Jackson series is very cute.

Ann McCaffrey Crystal Singer series I really liked. They mine "crystal" off world. She also does a series with dragons, "Dragons of Pern" and Cat people, "The Barque Cat series".

Clan of the Cave Bears.

Dragon Star Trilogies, people and their dragons communicating through sun & moon beams, hence Sunrunners.

A co-worker of mine is the author of a Young Adult series titled "Scary Mary". I borrowed the first two books in the series from a different co-worker because I had a niece who like to read .visiting. I read them first to make sure they weren't inappropriate for my niece, and while the story and the writing did seem more targeted toward the younger end of the YA market, I was surprised at how engaging the characters and the stories were.

Not a series, but I loved The Fault in Our Stars.

I second the recommendation for Rick Riordan's Olympians series. I found the series because I like the author's adult mysteries.

I read the Orphan Train series a few years back and really enjoyed it.

Along with many of the titles already shared, I loved the Michael Vey series by Richard Paul Evans (lots of good VS evil and lessons on character qualities). I started them with my granddaughter so we would have something in common to share and talk about. http://www.michaelvey.com/

I did the same thing with the Anne of Green Gables series with my daughter eons ago. It turned out my mother (a Canadian) read that series as a young girl, so she re-read them, my daughter's best friend and her mother read them, and "Anne" (with an 'e') was almost like a real person to all of us. We still have Anne references to this day.

I liked the Maze Runner series and Divergent too. Lauren, my daughter, got me to start watching The 100 tv series recently. I watched two seasons and then read the first book. Have the other two books on request at the library. They don't have them and have to borrow from another library. The 100 is set in the future, nuclear war destroys the earth, only survivors are on a space station. 100 "criminals" are sent back to earth to see if it's habitable. The tv series was good even with some really dumb dialog but the whole story is still interesting.

Ooooh! Anne of Green Gables! (Anne of Avonlea, Anne of the Island, Anne of Windy Poplars, Anne's House of Dreams, Anne of Ingleside, Chronicles of Avonlea 1 & 2 -- Plus the three books about the children which weren't available here when I was young (as it was I had to order most of the books from the main library's deep dark stash)). Major love.

For that matter, a lot of classics that they generally give young folks to read, such as those by Kipling and Stevenson can be remarkably good reads.

I love Elsewhere by Gabrielle Zevin. Repossessed by A. M. Jenkins. The Future of Us. Also anything by A. S. King. I have a teen, so I've been to teen book fairs and haunted the YA section of the library. DD's favorite was Struts and Frets by John Skovron. I also really enjoyed reading When You Reach Me by Rebecca Stead, a Newbery winner. That is aimed a little younger, but wonderful, especially if you liked A Wrinkle in Time, my favorite childhood book.

One of the best things about having a child is being exposed to literature you wouldn't have known about. This genre is no less profound for being written for a different audience. We each bring our own experiences and understanding to the books.

And yes, plllog, I agree - gotta love entire Anne of Green Gables series. DD has middle name spelled with an "e."
