I was just searching for tips on highway riding and came across this thread. I just took MSF course a month ago, bought my first bike (Harley Sportster 883) 2.5 weeks ago and have put on a little over 100 miles on it. The bike was intimidating at first, after only having experience on 250cc in the course for a few hours on the parking lot. So I took it to the parking lot to practice what I learned in the course. A week later my buddy and I agreed to go for a ride. Even though I was very nervous about riding on the roads, I decided to just go. My thought was "I would not be more ready later than I am now." It was very challenging and I made a few scary mistakes at first at very low speed, but I was getting better as the ride went on. We ended up riding about 30 miles with speeds up to 45 mph that day. I rode once more with him and then made a 30 mile trip on my own. It was even more challenging than it should have been cause it was drizzling and the roads were wet. It feels great to be on the bike, although challenging for me. So now I am contemplating to challenge myself a bit more and go on the highway on saturday morning, even if its just for a few miles. Of course I'm nervous about it. I also have advice to people who are very nervous to ride: First, read the tips that are found on this site: http://ridingsafely.com/ridingsafely3.html Second, if you think motorcycling is for you, then let go of the fear and just relax and ride. If its not fun for you and you're glad when the ride is over, such as one poster posted on this thread, then I highly advise to stop riding. I just bought my bike 2.5 weeks ago and can't wait for a good/warm weather so I can ride it. I even take a ride around the block if I don't have time for anything else. I LOVE it. Yes, I'm scared, yes, I'm nervous, but I do my best to leave it behind me while I'm riding. I'm not telling people to go on the highway if you're not comfortable with it, but you must enjoy it and ride without fear. As this site on safety says, riding with fear will get you into trouble. Ride safe and enjoy! p.s. As I've mentioned, I'm a beginner rider with almost no experience. So this is my opinion from my short experience and from what I've heard from experienced riders.

Actually, I have a ton of trees all around and behind my house. We lost two large pines to a tornado a couple of months ago so I got my veterinarian who has a landscaping biz to plant these things called "thuja green giant" trees. They are really very lovely (and expensive) but post virtual tour. The couple who looked on Tuesday said the house was "dated" By the way no comments about the interstate and it was rush hour when they were here. Agent has done a ton of marketing to other agents, I too have business cards, laminated with a picture of my house and he even laminated the multi color flyers which remind me of a sales flyer for a World Wide Wrestling match - very coloful, only slightly tacky with colorful boxes and pictures oh yeah, and folks can pick up their very own CD with the visual tour on it when they come in the house. I don't understand "dated" - that one always mystifies me. I am usually much more specific to my agent. Like there is no off street parking and it's in Maine for gosh sakes! The snow plow will cover up my husband's Mini he'll never find it until the snow melts. Of course you should see the fixer upper - and I use that term very loosely - that I was smitten with in Maine. Now it's my husband's turn to compromise. Oh, and it's not near an interstate.

Test it right away. If it is out of balance, you'll need to know this before too much time passes. The tire shop might be reluctant to redo the job if you bring it in a month later. I think I know the type of weights you are referring to. These are special weights that go on rims for high performance, wide profile tires. These rims are wide and have a rather large, wide surface in the inside diameter. The weights are small square coupons that are glued on the inside diameter or the rim. (I looked at a set yesterday on my Buddy's Mustang.) The main reason these come off is a poor glue job and the wheel not rotating very fast when going over really jamming bumps like a railroad crossing in poor condition. They rarely come off at high speed because the centrifugal force presses them against the rim. Good adhesion requires that the surface be chemically clean. To test, get your car up to at least 60 to 65 miles per hour. The wheels should run smooth at 65 mph before accepting the balance job. Another factor that can cause a wheel to be in balance at zero speed,but go out of balance at speed is a tire with a stretched belt. The belt may have been damaged with too much air pressure during mounting. (The pressure cast in on the sidewall of a tire is the maximum pressure the tire should ever see for any condition. This IS NOT the max. allowable running pressure. The max. running pressure is less.) At low speed, a ruined tie can be round, but goes out of round at speed. Typically, this shows up as the speed approaches 55 MPH. It can happen at other speeds.
