Marvin pine windows staining questions

Hi

I am looking to have my Marvin windows and patio doors stained before installation. I have 14 windows (3 picture, 2 picture casement, and rest casement) and 2 patio doors (one 3 panel door and one 4 panel door). I got a few quotes and they are all over the place.

- One painter said that he absolutely needs to use a pre-stain wood conditioner before he can apply the stain. Another says that the wood is stain ready from the factory and therefore stain can directly be applied.

- One estimates that the job will take 2 persons somewhere between 30 - 40 hrs. The other quotes 85 hrs for two persons.

- The stains and varnish they recommend are also different.

Needless to say I am totally confused. Can someone weigh in on the following:

- Do the Marvin windows need to be pre-conditioned before staining?

- Any guidance on which of the two time estimates is more realistic?

- Any guidance on the stains and finish coat? Water based? Oil based? Gel? Any recommended brands?

thanks

vishy
