How to paint old varnished pine trim?
Comments (2)The process you are using is pretty much the correct one, though I usually pick BIN for priming when the wood is previously stained and varnished because it sticks the best. Spraying will help you get there in fewer coats for sure and the end result should be brush mark free, but spraying is generally not something a novice painter can just pick up and learn in a few hours. It takes a lot of practice and some good hand eye coordination. I prefer to use an airless because it's faster, but if you want to mess around with spraying, I would suggest trying to rent a HVLP unit because it's slower. Another thing you can try to speed things up is applying the paint with a little 4" roller and then brushing it out. This just saves you some time dipping your brush into the paint so much. The roller helps to get the paint on faster....See MoreRefinish varnished floor
Comments (11)When you mentioned stain, that got my attention. I looked at your other post and pics. The floor needs to be sanded down to bare wood. Rent the dang floor sander and get busy! Stain will not absorb evenly unless the wood is completely bare. Even a gel stain will not look even, since there are spots with old finish and spots that are bare. 1. sand completely to raw wood 2. vacuum all dust thoroughly 3. wipe with denatured alcohol 4. stain of your choice, allow to dry one day. 5. apply first coat of Waterlox Original. Flood it on to saturate the wood completely, but don't leave any puddles. 6. allow to dry one day between coats. Keep the temperature minimum 60F 7. sand with 150 between coats. The paper should create dust, then you know the finish is dry enough. 8. repeat to apply 3 more thin coats of Waterlox Original. If you are after the satin look, only use Waterlox satin on the last coat. 9. Wait 3 days before traffic. If you are going to wax and buff the floor, wait at least 7 days for the varnish to cure. Waterlox is a traditional varnish that has been used on floors for almost 100 years. Many old Maple gymnasium floors are were finished with it....See Morenew cabinets painted with varnish
Comments (2)Why does a top quality cabinet paint need any clear coat or "color matched varnish". I believe you are probably misunderstanding what was said. He is probably intending to have a lacquer or enamel paint matched to any color you desire. Varnishes are clear coat finishes. They have either natural based resins, such as pine sap, or synthetic such as urethanes or alkyds. You might describe paints as "pigmented varnishes". Commonly used these days in commercial cabinet use, are catalyzed lacquers. These produce hard, durable, fast drying finishes....See MoreWhitewash / limewash over varnished wood ceiling?
Comments (19)This is our ceiling. Unfortunately we are forced to strip and sand it unless if we’re ready ti vet rid of it. Which we are not- it is the main feature of the home, so here we are..stripping that old timber from ’91🤌🏼 It is a HUGE job. Some will ask why forced- because we bought a hiuse that, it came out later, has a meth contamination and the ceiling was highest in numbers in contamination. So only way to keep it was to restore it- meth clean it, strip it, sand it and seal it again. Massive job, but 100% worth the effort. I can not imagine a standard poasterboard there 🤦🏽♀️...See Morenohlgm
