Question about Turface for Gritty Mix
Comments (7)Since I had to order my turface on the internet. I had not very much of it. The bark was 1/4 size from a good orchid place, the turface was 1/4 and so was the granite. I can't see any point in losing some of the turface because it gets ground into powder from the screening. It worked out great for me anyway. I was a bit heavier on the bark, due to a lack of the turface and granite, but the plants still look good and they are not sitting there wet. I checked and they are draining out. So, I don't think one needs to screen it. If the plant is a super fussy plant and ultra expensive maybe, but these were just test plants. They need good, but not excellent drainage....See MoreQuestion about gritty mix
Comments (7)In very small containers with small drainage holes it is very easy to overload the drainage hole and basically fill up the pot with water. When youdo this, you can get perlite or dry bark floating pretty easily. If the pot has gritty, the water should just pour out the bottom after you stop watering and drain the pot. It's only a problem if you get a lot of rain. I don't mind this so much as the tiny pots get really dry and flooding them helps wet the medium. 0 The paper towel is a bad idea. You most likely don't even need screen with small drainage holes especially once the roots fill in....See MoreQuick question about Al's gritty mix
Comments (10)I struck out on finding the gypsum at Lowes : ( I felt fairly certain I could find it there. How annoying. I might be able to find it at this florist/small garden center, but I think that is unlikely. I'll try looking there anyway, since I have to run errands in that general area tomorrow. I did go ahead and use some gritty mix sans gypsum for some succulent cuttings, just to get them into something for now. Hopefully that won't be a terrible thing, but I figured succulents could tough it out for a while....See MoreGritty mix/Kumquat tree questions
Comments (3)My tree is indoors. Also, should I water it everyday even with my turface problem? I heard that kumquats do like more moisture than other citrus. Is that true? How would you check when to water? with a wooden dowel or some other way? And if you use a dowel, can it be the one that holds the tree up or does it have to be one that's not already in the gritty mix?...See Moretapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a)
