Hey there Mentha, I don't think it's Pinguicula, it has the same walking stilts as those roots are sometimes referred to, but not the right form. Mine even had a pup on a stolon as this one does, but the form of the leaf base looked different. Pingicula is more the form of rosette. I had one for several yrs. Also the leaf tips on Pinguicula are extremely sharp & notoriously dangerous. The person who gifted me w/ mine hand carried it on a plane & on landing immediately asked for needle & alcohol to remove the leaf tip thorn which had become lodged in his thumb. If you ever find one, a very good travel tip for it is to place styrofoam peanuts on the needle-like leaf tips, helps prevent injuries to humans!

I am certainly hoping for many "visitors"...there were a good number of butterflies that passed through my yard last year without any gardens, so I really just wanted to convince them to hang out a little longer this year! My work hours are cut back for the summer so I need some sort of hobby to keep me occupied until September! I also love taking pictures and am looking forward to some great shots. Everything here is pretty much trial and error based on internet research...I came across a couple sites that claimed zinnias are good for the local butterflies here in south Jersey. We'll see!

I'm also in California, and I've had some Bhuts and other C. Chinese do the same thing. Despite being gentle (or not), the first bunch of leaves start to look pretty bad and eventually fall off. Smaller new leaves grow and then more shoots form. If I can keep the aphids off the new growth the plant recovers and looks great by May. You may want to try epsom salts as a foliar spray. Sometimes this will green them up nicely. Be careful of leaves staying wet overnight, and watch for aphids. I think they will be fine after a few weeks of warm, sunny weather. Good Luck.

Agj, Because they're actually missing the very bottom of the plant, its base, where the stem & rosette attach. Ill advised to root it w/ no stem whatsoever, as it would likely rot the very base of the plant & cause the whole thing to collapse. I wouldn't remove any bottom leaves at all, for fear of the same thing. I've never seen 'cuttings' of rosette type succulents w/ NO BASE or STEM at all. It's not something folks would normally do, if they'd grown these themselves as they'd know better, or anything that'd be done by folks who actually know these plants, that's why I'm suggesting return them if PURCHASED. Cuttings even if unrooted are comprised of the entire plant. Different if from a well-intended friend if they didn't know better. I once brought back a shopping back literally stuffed w/ cuttings from friends of a friend in San Diego. All the rosettes had some stems left on them at least an inch if not more. It's sort of the minimum that one needs. Imagine one quarter of a king size bed covered w/ newspaper & all sorts of succulent cuttings; almost all made it. For at least some of us, it doesn't have to be hit & miss at all. Since this person sounds like a Newbie, imagine if they plant these in soil & then watered? Major mush would likely follow. From the IDs given, if you do some reading, you'll see they mostly require similar care; strong sun (except the Haworthia), moderate watering, small clay pots (must have holes in them) & fast draining mix.
