Anybody have any info on APRICOTS N' CREAM or GOLD STRUCK?

I'm trying to figure out what I want to order from Regans. Lotta new ones from Star Roses. I'm not particularly excited about that photo of APRICOTS N' CREAM, but the couple of photos on HMF are drop-dead gorgeous. Not sure I wanna buy it tho if it's gonna look all washed out like it does in Regans photo. And the couple of shots of GOLD STRUCK on HMF look interesting, but I dunno if I wanna order it. If anybody out there might have one of these I'd love to hear about them! Also any info on CANDY CANE COCKTAIL and POLYNESIAN PUNCH would be nice too, altho I'm ordering those for sure anyway. Those two aren't even listed on HMF yet.

I'm gettin' antsy. I wanna order roses... (not like I really "need" any tho!)

I grew Gold Struck twice (or tried to) but it cankered out on me, once from Edmunds and once from Regans. Neither time did it survive more than a few weeks. I like the golden color, but I've been much more impressed with the truly golden color of Good as Gold.

The others you mention look interesting and new to me (particularly Candy Cane Cocktail), so if nothing else you're being enabling. How did the rest of your Regan's roses work out this year? I remember you commenting that your Big Momma cankered out on you too, and I was disappointed in mine since that one was own root. I had particularly unfortunate canker from my Regans roses this year, though they have been perfectly lovely at replacing them and perhaps looking for a different grower to supply their plants. When the roses sit around before they can be sent to cold zones like mine, there's more time for mischief to happen to the canes, though this apparently started at the point of the growers.

Of course you need more roses - how else will you replace the ones that didn't make the septic tank move? By Cactus Joe's definition, you are a rose nut (over 1000 roses), and I'm an apprentice rose nut at just short of 900. Never say "enough".

Hmmm... guess I didn't see GOLD STRUCK at Edmunds last time. My BIG MOMMA never even broke dormancy let alone get cankered out! LOL They're supposed to replace it. The others I got from Regans were SILVER STAR and TAKE IT EASY. Those two did ok, but SS isn't looking good at the moment. I always have trouble with that rose for some reason. I've gone thru 4 of them over the last few yrs. If this one dies, I guess I'll give up on it. And the RASPBERRY CREAM TWIRL climber that I got from Edmunds did the same thing as BIG MOMMA, so they're supposed to be replacing that one. Hope I don't have any problems with any of the roses in the coming season.

So,Cynthia, get going and get caught up so you can be classed as a Rose Nut too!! You're almost there!!!! I mean what's another hundred or so? ☺

I'm sorry folks--I just saw the comments about Goldensweet. I'm not that great at describing food--I guess I would say is they are really sweet with a hint of tart. Sweet like a Blenheim without the "candied" flavor an overripe Blenheim can get. (Is that what they mean by "vinous"?) Or maybe sweet like a Cot-N-Candy aprium but with more complexity and a little tartness. All I can say is every year I wait for the only grower who has them at the Farmer's Market to get them in (they are among the latest) and the first one I taste I always say: "They ARE as yummy as I remember!" (OK, now you all have me dying for an apricot!) Oh and to correct my above post, my Tardirouge has NOT bloomed yet--it is way later than Robada or Orangered, which now have fading blooms. And for those of you looking for late bloomers, one of my newest apricots, an Autumn Royal, still has not bloomed yet either! Carla in Sac

YO! Abba Dabba Doo (thanks to hostahillbilly's pics) - besides the pics, believe us, this cultivar is probably the fastest grower here, even in heavy shade. Do yourself and it a big favor and bury a soaker seeping hose around it. I'm pretty sure it is impossible to overwater it. When it does get a lot of water it really 'stands up' in the traditional 'vase-shaped' form, pretty! Whirlwind - My wife teases the heck outa me every time we go on a hosta run because I always exclaim, 'Hey, Hon, lookie here!' when I come across this cultivar. Even though it's not a BIG one or a fast grower, it must be one of the ones that qualify for the 'ten yard' rule, or however that goes. Anyway, it is distinct, and everyone should have one, sorta like H. 'June', eh? hh

Found this one at the Univ of Calif peppers download. It had an apricot pepper jelly recipe that is very similar to the big batch but using powdered pectin. It has more apricots, more vinegar and less sugar. No onions but I could sub some for some of the bell peppers. I would finely dice the veggies rather than put them in the blender. APRICOT PEPPER JELLY Makes 6 half-pint (250-ml) jars. 1 1Ã¢ÂÂ4 cups dried apricot halves, finely slivered 300 ml 1 cup red or green bell pepper strips 250 ml (about 1 medium-size pepper) 1Ã¢ÂÂ3 cup chopped jalapeno or other hot 75 ml pepper, stems and seeds removed 2 cups cider vinegar (5%) 500 ml 4 cups sugar 1 L 1 package powdered fruit pectin 1 package 1Ã¢ÂÂ2 tsp butter or margarine 2 ml 5 drops red or green food coloring 5 drops (depending on the type of pepper used) 1. Cover dried apricots with boiling water. Leave for approximately 10 minutes. Drain. 2. Combine bell pepper strips, chopped hot peppers, drained apricots, and 1Ã¢ÂÂ2 cup (125 ml) vinegar in a food processor or blender. Process until partially ground with small chunks remaining. Pour into a saucepan. 3. Mix 1Ã¢ÂÂ4 cup (63 ml) sugar with pectin. Stir into fruit mixture. Add butter and food coloring. 4. Bring to a boil quickly, stirring constantly. Immediately stir in remaining sugar. 5. Bring to a full boil, stirring, and boil hard for 1 minute. Remove from heat. 6. Skim foam off the top. Then ladle jelly into hot half-pint jars, leaving 1Ã¢ÂÂ4 inch (0.5 cm) of headspace. 7. Wipe jar rims with a clean, damp cloth. Secure lids and ring bands, and process in a boiling water bath as prescribed in Table 8. Table 8. Hi Sarah, a belated welcome to Idaho and the Rose Forum, home of many nice rose people who are happy to share their knowledge of roses. If you have a problem with roses wilting in the heat, it could be our extremely dry air. Also we are lucky to get 10 inches of precipitation a year, so constant irrigation is a must. You may have to water more here. I hope you might consider a drip irrigation system if it's possible for you. They are really the way to go. I also recommend Edward's Greenhouse in Boise. Right now, they have a great rose selection, but it's going fast. The people there, especially the perennials department head, Anju Lukas, is a real expert on roses, clematis, and perennials in general. She's so friendly, and will share her vast knowledge if asked. If you like clematis, they have hundreds of plants. A few of my favorite roses are Julia Child, of course, who does so well here. Evelyn (David Austin) is a favorite peach/apricot of mine. A lot of my favorites are purple, and you don't mention that color, but just in case, I love Twilight Zone, Ebb Tide, and Munstead Wood. Of course, I love the Tantau roses that Palatine Roses in Canada sells. Among my favorites are Augusta Luise, a peach, orangish, pinkish...hard to describe rose, and deep winy red rose called Ascot. I'm trying the new David Austin rose, Olivia Rose, this spring, and she is light pink. I also love the Meilland pink, Frederic Mistral. I love the light lavender rose, Love Song, which also a Carruth rose like Julia. It does well in the heat, but is a little cold tender. I think Easy Does It would do well if you give it some winter protection, or site it in one of the warm spots in your garden. Right now, mine is in a cold windy spot--not good, and will be moved. Another rose I like very much is Bonica, a light pink shrub rose that might look good in multiples. But if you're looking for a blend of colors like Easy Does It, I think others on this forum might have more recommendations than I do, since I don't grow many of that color type. Also, the roses for sale at Edwards will be blooming very soon--some may have already started, so stopping in there to view the roses in person might be good (you may have already done this). Come to think of it you're right, my Big Momma didn't break dormancy either, but the canes eventually blackened down to the base, so I thought of it as a canker issue. Ditto for my Raspberry Cream Twirl too, so maybe it was indeed a problem with the grower for those roses. Nice to know it isn't just me. Also good to know that Silver Star isn't a strong grower for you so I don't feel too bad. Although just this year (on the third replacement) my Silver Star from Roses Unlimited seems to be doing OK and has overwintered. In my world, that is a success even if it doesn't bloom much.

Ummm, have you seen my rose order for next year already? I haven't even started on the normal fall orders and I already have a huge bulk order from Heirloom and a large order from Palatine, plus some miscellaneous rose orders. Unless I get massive rose death over this winter (and I expect around 200 per year anyway), it might be the year I join the official Rose Nuts next year.

Beth, I received Gold Struck as a freebie when I attended a pruning class this spring at a local nursery. I put it in a very sunny spot, west-facing against a pale yellow wall, fed it, watered it -- and have been very disappointed. It's probably going to get scrapped.

Maybe three-four small blooms at most, all in March and April, and those were turned dirty-white and blew in a day or two. Nothing since -- I mean nothing. Very sensitive to sun and heat -- leaves brown easily. I'm in 10a/20, and I cannot recommend this rose.

Anybody have any info on APRICOTS N' CREAM or GOLD STRUCK?
