Help save my old apple tree-grafting
Comments (3)Here are some of the links I've saved that I found very helpful. http://citrus.forumup.org/about1762-citrus.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNXDPVfJBW4 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKTgiFVpAUE http://blip.tv/midfex/tutorial-t-bud-and-chip-bud-fruit-tree-grafting-techniques-350977 Konrad also has a beautiful set of photos of his very refined bark grafting. I hope he re-posts them. If your old tree has watersprouts that grew last year go out and cut a couple off. Cut them into sections about a foot long, wrap in a damp, not soggy, paper towel, and place them in a sealed ziplock bag in the refrigerator. They should make excellent scion material. If you don't have watersprouts (which are new growth shooting right up from the middle of older, established branches) look for the longest pieces of new growth -last year's growth- that you can find. If there's been any pruning on the tree there should be some, but on old and neglected trees they can be very hard to come by. If so, prune a few branches back into established wood to encourage some new growth. Prune back to a bud or a young fork -and nip the young fork too, again back to a bud. You'll need a place to graft the scions to, but first concern yourself with gathering and storing the scions. Once you have some scions to work with people here will be glad to speak to the questions of rootstock. This is a very doable, fun project that needn't cost you a lot of money and will put you in the company of some very interesting people, and may well become a lifelong interest. Good luck. :-)M...See MoreCan this Apple tree be saved?
Comments (3)Hi, Phreebo. Put me down with The Fruitnut. FB is most likely going to get your leaves and young tenders b/4 old bark. You could shave off a sample of the sooty tissue and have it analyzed, but the outcome shouldn't affect your action, really. For best yields, implement a good spray program and keep thinned. If you can't throw your hat through the branches, prune some more, esp. those watersprout guys. Misterbaby...See Moresaving 1st year apple tree from borer attack
Comments (6)This is an off-label use for those fly-strip bars that contain dichlorvos, so do not expect that competent orchards who have to follow federal rules will be using this method, but it does work for the small orchardist. I had a borer making frass on one of my trees. Tried to get him with a wire and all that. I thought I got him, but the next day there was more frass. So I cut a sliver of plastic off one of the fly-strip bars that I store in the freezer (in a jar, so that it is preserved indefinitely) and poked that into the borer hole. Then the opening of the borer hole was plugged with kids modeling clay (to confine the dichlorvos vapors to his tunnel). The vapors from the fly strip sliver killed the borer dead as a doornail. No further damage to the tree, and it chugs on....See MoreCan I save this Apple Tree?
Comments (4)planted like that it's very likely to have problems if it survives at all. There are roots exposed! If I were you, I'd rebury it, stake it, but buy another tree or two to replace it. I like trying to save plants like this but this will take years to be back to full strength. If you don't want to hedge your bets with trying to save it, just buy another and toss the old one. Probably would be good to talk to the nursery on proper planting depths, too....See Morecmzacker
