My nice Adenium has root rot what to do ?

Do I cut all roots off and let it reroot ?

Jed is right. I'd do the same thing. You may have to cut several times until you see unblemished plant tissue. Then wash it thoroughly. After that, allow it to dry for a day---from the size of your plant it will probably take several days. The reason you want to dry it out is to minimize further rot when you repot it. I suggest using moist but not wet medium (ideally 60 percent pumice and 40 percent potting soil). Absolutely avoid putting it in a large pot--I can not stress this enough. If you have a heating mat, put it on that 24/7, then aim an Anglepoise at it (fluorescent or daylight LED for 14 hours a day). Or if you are anywhere without the four seasons, just keep it in the shade outside.

The leaves will drop, that's normal. Resist the temptation to water. Keep us posted.

It wouldn't be damage from a centipede. Fungus gnat larvae are extremely small and not easily seen in the soil. Excessive watering often encourages an infestation and the roots end up looking just like the one pictured. The end of the root is gone as well as any small root hairs. What zone are you in? Unless it's maybe 10 a or b I can't imagine a need for daily watering, even with a well draining potting mix and wind. If you aren't in a very warm climate your seedlings should probably be inside, at least at night. I still think it looks like something is eating the root as it appears healthy. If there was rot the root would likely be soft and discolored.

Good lord, how can a palm get root rot? I been growing palms for 10 years now and I never thought to look. I just figured that if the roots rotted the palm would die and I would start over. I am not sure about root rot, some palms dont want you to mess with the roots, others dont care. If I was you, I would make sure you have good drainage. You need to add alot of perlite and some mulch or something to break up the soil. Sounds like if its got root rot, there is way to much water sitting around where it shouldnt be. Does your pot have holes? I dont know what you would do with the root. I think I would just fix my dirt problem and stick it back in the pot. Leave it alone and see what happens.

I would love to have the opportunity to take pictures of Aphrodite again. I love that sparkle in the closeup. Glad you liked the photos too. The leaves are long and green, but are bent down right at the top of the bulb. There are about six leaves. I suppose the rotting began in the spring (it was fine up until I took it outdoors), and it just didn't have the strength to produce more leaves. I am wondering whether I should just let the leaves yellow, cut them and allow it to rest. I am hoping to get another amaryllis from a nearby garden center when they get them in. They are more expensive but the bulb is a good size and they had had some nice ones I thought. I was thinking of purchasing Charisma last year, but couldn't decide. Then it was gone.

Yes, you can cut. Feel the stem. Is it squishy? You will want to cut the stem back until you reach healthy tissue (start at the roots, of course). I see some brown on the stem. I would start cutting there, and work up. Keep cutting until you reach tissue with no black or brown. You want creamy white-green. After you finish cutting, dust with cinnamon to discourage disease and rot. Let the cut stem sit out of soil for a few days (in a dry, dim, cool place). the cut end will feel rough and hard (not moist or juicy). Put it in new DRY soil. I would suggest using 60% perlite and 40% cactus and succulent mix. wash the perlite to get out the dust. Don't breathe in the dust, either- it is harmful to the lungs. Prop up the stem in the soil with rocks, so it stays upright. In a few weeks, you should see roots :) Don't check often for roots, or you may break existing ones. It is best to wait until you see new growth, and then you can water a bit. The soil you have in the picture looks like it has a large contingent of peat. Peat holds water for a long time, and that rots the roots. By doing the above mix, you can avoid rot, but still be careful with watering. To check if you need to water, you can use a wooden skewer. Poke it into the soil, and if it comes out dry, you can water. Good luck! ~palmsandsnow

You must excise all of the mushy black. I recommend doing it by hand if possible. I've only had small areas of rot, but I've basically just scraped and allowed them to dry. How much of the plant is soft?

Wow I can't believe that the leaves aren't turning yellow and falling off. Kerryblue how did you even know it was rotting?

Jed has given great advice, get rid of the rot and let it dry. If you cut it you have to sterilize before every cut. So if you don't get enough the first time, you sterilize again before cutting. You have to cut back to good tissue otherwise it will continue to spread. I hope you are able to save it, such a nice little tree.

I already cut the rotting part with exacto knife. I was told to use cinnamon for anti bacterial. I went ahead and used it.

@ addict2plants I was staring at it and saw wrinkling by the base. I then took it out the pot and saw all the rot. I will post how it looks now

Good luck, kerryblue. I feel your pain. I had one earlier with root rot. I did as the others suggested, and it is coming back nicely. Lots of new growth. It really was painful to keep cutting.

If you got all the rot off it will survive. Make sure your soil is very AIRY. Adeniums tolerate tons of water if the soil is very airy so the roots get air around them. AdeniumRose company grow thousands of adeniums 100% outside (NO COVER what-so-ever) - inches of rain every week with less than 3% loss. Airy soil is the key!

Growstone maybe worth looking into to create more aeration in your pots, and maybe use at a ratio of 50-50 or maybe 60-40/70-30, the larger number representing grow stone, lower number representing you medium. Just a thought.

Both pots had a bunch of perlite and pumice I think I left them too long in the same pot. I had to cut another one. After pouring out the soil
