How many times a day do you check for seedlings?
Comments (22)At least twice a day - morning and evening. I know when to expect seedlings by now, but I still check - hey, a lotta stuff can happen in a few hours! I talk to them (or rather, myself) too - "Is that a teeny radicle I see?" or "Boy, these are getting nice and FAT!". My new(ish) neighbor must believe I'm nuts, especially since whenever I see her face-to-face, I flash her this BIG toothy smile! She seems kind of skittish! hehehe .... I just bought some new bulbs for my mini maglite so I can better see my containers at the night-check. PV...See MoreHow many hours/day do you leave your lights on??
Comments (18)I start my tomatoes in an unheated garage after solstice in Oregon. After the seedlings come up, I take them off the heat mat and use just the lights close and have a fan running to imitate wind. They are very stocky that way. I also bring the tray out on sunny days a few minutes and work up to more. When I pot up the the first leaves they go into an unheated green house and I open up the green house for a part of the day. They are very stalky that way....See MoreHow many pets do you have? How many is 'too many'?
Comments (102)i lost my senior great dane girl 5 weeks ago to bone cancer. it was sudden and shocking and i still look for her. my remaining dane girl and eden were joined at the hip, pip took the loss very hard and had been grieving so much, it broke my heart. i contacted pip's breeder and one of her former co-owners and asked that they keep an eye out for any adults that any breeder friends might be considering a new home for (retired show dogs, etc.). the co-owner gave me the contact information for one of her people who had a dane boy she had been looking for just the right home for and the rest is history. meet "flighty foto my way", call name "frank". frank will be 4 years old on 5/31. he is a very sweet boy and he and pippin hit it off immediately at our meet 'n' greet friday. they do zoomies numerous times a day, sleep curled up together and are just a perfect pair. pippin is so much happier and that makes me happier. even though i miss eden terribly, i am beginning to heal now that pip is feeling better. frank is a bit on the thin side because he lived the last 4 weeks with a female dane who was going through a heat cycle and when that's going on, intact males ignore food, do a lot of pacing and fretting and routinely lose weight. he's eating like a horse so i'm confident he will gain and be back to his normal weight soon. i'm giving him a few weeks to settle in and then i'll make an appointment to have him neutered....See MoreHow long do you go without opening a single window in your house?
Comments (18)Fresh outside air is critical to good health. Unfortunately we don't know what levels of what contaminants are unhealthy. Is 1000ppm CO2 OK? Too high? And on and on. On the upper end we only close windows if the outside humidity is above about 65-70% or temp above about 80-85°f. Or to keep rain or very strong winds from blowing in. On the low end we won't necessarily keep a lot of windows open when it's below about 45°f but will often have one or two open a few inches either through the night or for a few hours. I doubt we ever go more than maybe a week without opening some windows unless high temps are below 0°f. It's not unusual when we've had a cold spell (highs of -15°f are no unheard of) for a bit to see lots of people in our neighborhood open windows as soon as it's above 0°f one day....See MoreUser
