Planting large quantities of trees....and having them survive.

I'm interested in reforesting an area approximately 8 acres in zone 6. There are several places that sell seedlings in bulk, but my question is related to how to get them to survive once they're planted. In my yard, we planted half a dozen fruit trees and spent the first year desperately trying to keep them watered enough to get them through to the point where their roots were sufficiently deep so that we could back off on the constant watering. I'm not going to be going out every day and watering dozens and dozens of trees....is there a science to doing something like this or do I just need to plant 5x the amount of trees I actually want and hope for the best? Haven't decided on species yet, but the surrounding area has a lot of poplar and various pines, so those might be a start.
