Pine floors with Waterlox finish

Curious to know if anyone has used Waterlox on pine flooring? This is what it looks like completely dry after 2 coats. It has a rough texture but was told that will even out as coats build up? Is the roughness the grain popping and if so, is that normal?

Pine will take a lot of Waterlox. I'm just now doing my reclaimed pine floors, and am anticipating 5 coats in all. With 3 coats, about 80% of it is shiny, but other areas are still dull. I'm going to do one more coat of original, then a final coat of satin to cut the gloss.

What did you do to prep the floors? I think I can see sander marks. Mine have rough areas, but I did not sand, as I want a more rustic old look. You can sand Waterlox between coats if you want to get a smoother floor, but it is a lot more labor, and will use more finish.

Yes. What you need to do now is lightly sand the floor, wipe off the dust, and apply several more coats on Waterlox. It really soakes it up.

Here's my bathroom ... 6 or more coats on pine (wider boards at bottom) and oak (thinner boards near toilet pipes).

Your concerns over damage to the wood by water or pebbles in shoes or high heels are all valid. Bad news is there is not a product invented yet to eliminate those concerns. High heels or any shoes for that matter should never be worn on the floors. And the finish will delay the damaging effects water causes. But wont prevent it. Polyurethanes gives you the best in protection and looks.

We put Waterlox sealer and Waterlox satin on our white pine floors. Generally, I did about 200 sf at a time, had window fans exhausting air from the room for at least 4 hours after finishing each coat (and pulling in fresh air from a room elsewhere). At that point, 4 hours after finishing a coat, the floor had cured enough that I could put on booties or socks (not shoes) and walk on the floor without leaving any footprints to turn off the fan and close the window. The floors were not tacky at all at that point. Even so, I always waited at least 24 hours before applying the next coat. The floors now feel hard and slick walking on it in socks, and leave no marks when walking on it in clean shoes. It sounds like your installer just tried to rush things a little, in addition to not ventilating and letting shoes on the finish too soon. He didn't allow each coat to cure sufficiently before applying the next coat. But given time, the finish will cure anyway. Like the Waterlox person said, to fix it now you must first let it cure for a couple of weeks. Actually, at that point your problem *may* have gone away. The satin will continue to flatten in sheen and that alone may cause the footprints to disappear. If not, Waterlox is very forgiving and another final coat of satin, properly cured and allowing nothing but sock feet on it for 4 to 7 days after the final coat like the directions say and the floor will look great. Even better - I ended up putting on 2 coats of sealer and 3 coats of satin on the floors because the big knots in white pine took more Waterlox to get a little sheen to them, and you can tell a favorable difference between 3 coats of satin and 2 coats of satin on the soft pine. 2 coats are fine, but 3 look even smoother and softer in sheen. Fixing the mistake may be a blessing in disguise!

It's four years for my kitchen floor this month! Time flies. No peeling. Waterlox isn't really prone to peeling since it is a deep penetrating oil, if you sand off all old finish. Being a yellow pine wood, there are dings, which would have happened anyway. I hope for one more warm weekend this year to add another coat. I think that will end up being the maintenance schedule. One board that came out of a closet floor that was stained with grease has finally bled through to the surface and is sticky. I plan on just wiping it down with solvent before the re-coat. It's my fault for using that board, but I was pretty short on mat'l. Casey

UFSC: Thank you for the great information. I want to test the Pallman Oil further. Has it worked well for you to apply regular stain underneath to achieve the color you want? MiaOKC: I talked to someone who finishes hardwood floors and he really didn't like the Rubio Monocoat at all. He said he has seen a lot of problems, but he wasn't more specific than this. So I have ruled this out. He also doesn't like the Waterlox finish because he says the smell is just terrible, and he's had boards that still smelled two years later. So I've ruled this out as well. Which leaves Pullman Magic Oil and Osmo. I have tested the Osmo and I liked the result. I just need to play around with the colors, and the samples are pretty expensive. When I used Waterlox on my pine floors, I put 2 coats of shellac down first, sanding with 220 in between,of course, then one coat of regular high gloos Waterlox , then2 coats of satin Waterlox. OMG,they were gorgeous! and they remained in nearly perfect condition for about 5 years, while tenants without pets occupied the house. However, I moved back into the house with my 2 dogs, and in a matter of weels, the floors were so messed up, scratches everywhere! It’s a furnished place, so adding more coats is a difficult challenge, but I dont even know if more coats would make much of a difference. Before Waterlox, the floors had been finished with regular solvent based polyurethane, in which time (about 3 years or so), I had 3 dogs living in the house, and there wasnt any substantial wear on the floors. im thinking Waterlox is a beautiful finish,but perhaps not strong enough for high traffic, pets,etc…. BTW, my floors are heart pine, so not exactly the same, as far as popping and such. if I were to try Waterlox on your type of pine, I would definately seal if first and put so many coatswith sanding in between. I dunno, maybe even a wax finish.
