need suggestions for basement floor

Hi, we are doing a large remodel and I am having a tough time figuring out the basement floor. It is not a walk out basement and gets limited but some light. There is a full bath down there and it will be used as older kids' play-space/guest room. I love the look of ceramic wood tile but my builder is less enthusiastic. He thinks it will feel hard and cold and we should install wall-to-wall carpet or luxury vinyl tile. I worry about air quality and feel tile would be a better choice than carpet or vinyl tile. We live in Maryland so winters are cold. I wish we had under-floor heating but we don't. I would love to do ceramic tile and then put a couple of large rugs to add a soft layer. Anyone put tile in the basement and regretted it? Would carpet be the smart choice?
