Contractor? Home Designer? DIY/Home Depot?

We are currently planning our
kitchen renovation on a somewhat restrictive budget ($24,000 - not incl appliances).

My problem is this: This is our
first house, and our first major project, so I am not sure exactly what type of
business I should approaching given what we need and what our budget is. I want
to approach the right venue and also be a good citizen of the home renovation
world. That means not wasting anyone’s time.

The major options appear to be:

-Approach a general contractor about
the entire project

-Approach a kitchen designer about
cabinet selection, counters, and layout; and my friendly neighborhood trades
people about wiring, plumbing, drywall, etc

-Go to Home Depot or other Big Box
Store on the cabinets; and to the neighborhood tradespeople for all the stuff Big
Box does not do

The general details
are that we need to remove the current kitchen, install
new cabinets/counters, move a sink a few feet (on the same wall), do
some new wiring, replace a
damaged drywall ceiling, and modify the entrance to the kitchen
(infilling the wall a bit on one side, reducing the opposite side).
There is a stacked washer/dryer in the current kitchen whose connections
need to move just a bit so that it fits into the configuration better. I
need advice for now to fit a replacement w/d - compacts this
time - into the kitchen layout. I suspect I need custom cabinet to pull
it off.

Ideally, each side of the kitchen (galley) will be about 10', and
we're mainly interested in installing lower cabinets and two high
cabinets (one for the washer-dryer, one for a wall oven or pantry). I
suspect we can't afford uppers; my husband prefers wall shelves.
