My compost bin has yellow jackets
Comments (11)Last year while turning my compost i was attacked by yj bees and had my first moderate-severe allergic reaction to 5 stings. Man i was pretty scared, and that makes it worse, like getting bit by a venomous snake- stay calm?- not easy when your hands and feet feel like they are on FIRE as your tongue and throat start to swell. I broke my no pesticde rule and thru sevin in the hole. It killed them in 24 hrs..The nest was where my 4 little kids play and i needed to deal with the problem asap.. In the fall i dug all contaminated compost out and re-composted it in a tumbler. I now have some epinephrine handy. I also steer clear of yj, honey bees are so much nicer....See MoreBees vs. Yellow Jackets
Comments (20)Wet and moist will keep them out of my wood pile...hopefully. I need to keep an eye out for where they are nesting again, maybe it is in the neighbor's old shake roof. A yellow jacket story...if you want to spend the time reading. My husband was riding his horse around the back forty and I was shooting some pics, one of him and horse on a hill. All at once he and the horse were jumping around, stupid stuff, nothing of beauty. I started laughing, the dog started running all over, husband's hat is flying in the air, he's off the horse on the ground, the horse is "gone", I'm still laughing. Then, I'm totally covered by yellow jackets (as is the dog and of course my husband and horse) which started the whole chaos. All of us were rolling on the ground, batting at our bodies and finally escaped to the house with the bees following. I don't know what the neighbors thought was going on, or if they even saw what was going on. We must have looked like raging idiots. Thankfully we were not alergic or could have died, we had so many bumps from bites they were inside our hair and clothing...even the dog and horse had them all over. My husband's grand idea was filling the hill's hole (where the nest was) with gasoline and lighting it. This was a lost cause at first, took 3 tries with him running as fast as the fire to get out of there. He just made them mad until they got the idea he wasn't quitting. I have no clue where he got the gasoline idea, but know I wouldn't suggest it. And still have the pics of him and the horse on that hill. Camera never got the upset though....See Moreyellow jacket problem
Comments (21)Lacey, I don't use Sevin dust in my gardens because of its toxicity to bees. I did use it the year I had three ground nests of yellow jackets....two were sited where they had to be treated or risk stings to people, guests, one was isolated enough I could leave it (warning only one neighbor who was unlikely to climb up the hill it was located on ) and wait for winter to take care of that last and third nest. For the two ground nests in harms way: I put approx 1/4 - 1/3 C Seven dust from the shaker container into a disposable cup. Went out after dark and dumped the entire contents in a pile immediately on the visible ground entrance (if you look at a diagram of the underground nest, the actual nest entrance is quite protected underground). The yellow jackets emerging and returning had to land in the dust and carried it back into the nest on themselves. It took a couple of days until no more activity could be seen, and then I was able to hose any residual Sevin away....See MoreCrepe myrtle infested with yellow jackets
Comments (7)aphids make honeydew.. the wasps are harvesting such ... when you kill the aphids.. the wasps will leave.. unless they have a house in there.. look close... if they dont start going away soon.. then your treatment failed... run your water.. and then take a hand trowel.. and dig a few 3 to 6 inch holes .. AND FIND OUT ABOUT MOISTURE in your soil.. no one can tell you anything.. its just you and your shovel ... a shrub needs a deep soaking.. about once a month.. if there is drought ... OTHERWISE.. MOST SHOULD .. oops.. be free range.. and not need watering.. unless its a recent transplant... this is one reason you dont put transplanted trees and shrubs on drip.. you need to water infrequently but deeply.. as deep as the root mass planted.. which might take a couple hours of drip to do such ... in my sand.. i had to run a zone for 8 hours to get water a foot down .... do you water for that long???.. start digging holes.. and find out ... if you want solve the problem.. then invest in the proper remedy.. rather than homemade witches brews ... you are correct..t hat problems find stressed plants ... ken...See More- 11 years ago
