Help: Fullsize fridge/freezer-Frigidaire, Electrolux or Thermador
Comments (6)Thank you so much for your input! I went to a showroom yesterday to see the Electrolux Icon set (the only one around Baltimore that had them on the floor!) I was really impressed with the quality and the layout. The Thermadors give up just two inches but that seems to make a difference in the layout (There are no shelves on the whole bottom half of the Therm too.) The *only* thing that somewhat bothers me is that I wish the ice machine was in the middle like the Therm or the GE Monograms because I have two daughters who can't reach or will pull the ice down on their head, but I could always put in a second container of ice down on a lower shelf given how much space is in the freezer! We are also getting an ice machine for a wet bar but I hate to think of 8- and 10-yr old hands going in it every time they want a drink! I've also heard good things about the Electrolux ovens and particularly like the roll-out racks which are included (and all extra for the Therm.) So, that pushes me towards the Electrolux as well. There's a nice rebate going on right now and I'm up to three items b/c the fridge and freezer are considered separate appliances. That's an $800 discount, need to investigate a couple other Electrolux appliances (have heard good things about the bev center, wine cooler and/or ice machine. Not sure about the dishwasher vs the others) because I could get it up to $1000. And, going with the Electrolux is certainly lower than the Therm even with the 1-2-Free deal, especially since it's not guaranteed to be the best products for my situation across the board. Anyway, that's where I stand right now. Would love to hear more - Thanks!...See MoreAll-Refrigerator/ All-Freezer: Frigidaire, Electrolux, Icon
Comments (20)We have the Kenmore Pro ones (like these) which I think are made by Frigidaire. (?) We've only had them installed for 2 months, but before that they sat for 2 years in our dirty garage -- long story -- so we were a little worried about how they would work after sitting for all that time but bottom line, no problems, and we're thrilled with them. For the price they can't be beat. There are two slightly odd things about them however. One is that there's no meat drawer, which I was used to in our other fridge and I do miss that. There are two HUGE drawers which I love having, but we fill one with fruits and the other with veggies, so then I just have meat on one the shelf above the drawers, which is okay but I would rather have a drawer for it. The second odd thing is that the shelf structure above the drawers are actually attached to the drawers themselves and they don't seem to come off for cleaning. The glass itself lifts out, but the surrounding shelf frame doesn't detach from the drawer (at least that we could figure out!) which makes it awkward for cleaning as you can't just turn it upside down into your sink and dump out fallen particles. Those are very minor inconveniences for the space and convenience (especially the freezer space which is incredible), and overall I love these appliances and I would get them again in a heartbeat....See MoreElectrolux vs Frigidaire ALL Freezer/Refrigerators
Comments (5)We were able to find the Frigidaire All freezer/frig combo in stock and on display at a appliance store about 70 miles from us - we drove up, took a look at them, and bought them. They are in storage right now, so I have no idea how they will work once installed, but we were impressed with them enough to buy them. Comparing the specs of the Elextrolux, and seeing what looked like more reported problems with them, we were happy to go with the "lower end" Frigidaire. Time will tell if we were right! The other plus is the Enegry Star rating, and the ice maker (we didn't want a water dispenser)...The ice maker is the simple type in the top corner and takes up little space. The best is the price for how much space you gain....See MoreNeeding help to decide on induction range - Kenmore vs Frigidaire
Comments (10)The Kenmore and Frigidaire both have (IIRC) something like 19 or 20 power settings for the stovetop burners. Those (and induction's responsiveness) should provide the fine-tuning you've missed with the coil burners and radiant electric stoves. Combining purchasing of multiple appliances? That can give you some bargaining ability, too. See what Labor Day brings, then. To go back to your concern about some online comments from reviewers who thought the Kenmore "could have been better at baking," consider a couple of points that might allay your concerns about that aspect of your choosing between the Frigidaire model and the Kenmore version with the larger oven. The Reviewed.com write up on the Kenmore, IIRC, was the one which "thought it could have been better at baking." Their knock was that the oven temperature cycled up and down. I'm pretty sure that they were measuring temperatures right after the "preheat" indicator came on, which means the oven was still cycling and the oven walls were not fully preheated. You've probably seen the discussions here about most oven preheat indicators only measuring air temperatures. Fully preheating the walls (for radiant heating and even baking) takes double or more the preheat time. I would discount Reviewed.com's comment accordingly. You also mentioned Consumer Reports. It's rating chart gives the Kenmore a half red-dot, rather than a full red dot, for baking performance. CR measures baking performance on multiple trays of sugar cookies which it runs under a scanner to detect what may be very fine differences on the exact degree of sameness of browning. It also is grading on a curve and measuring degrees of excellence. CR does not really explain how much "better" an "excellent" rating is over a "very good" and "good" rating. (For all we know, the differences might well be imperceptible to most of us.) Further, CR's tests of baking multiple sheets of sugar cookies are usually conducted without using any convection functions which often (though not always) even out the baking of such things. Also consider that the "half-dot" rating for the Kenmore is the same as for the Frigidiare and Electrolux freestanding ranges. Consider also that the relatively longstanding Electrolux EW301S slide-in got a "good rating" from CR for baking while the long threads here on that slide-in report what users have seen as generally excellent baking and roasting abilities. So, I would say a "very good" rating for baking from CR does not mean the Kenmore is a subpar performer unless you suffer from what we used to call the "yuppie disease" --- anything is a terrible product if it is not universally rated as the absolute best-there-ever-was. :>)...See Morehtc2015
