Electrolux vs Frigidaire ALL Freezer/Refrigerators

The Electrolux ALL fridge and freezer units aren't too expensive, and the Frigidaire units are even more of a bargain. Is this a case of...you get what you pay for?

I know there are some threads where it appears there were problems with these in prior years. More appeared to be about Electrolux than Frigidaire, but my understanding is that these are essentially the same with a better fit and finish with the Electrolux.

Any recent concerns with either of these units?

from my readings most of the elux problems were related to water/ice dispensing models.

We were able to find the Frigidaire All freezer/frig combo in stock and on display at a appliance store about 70 miles from us - we drove up, took a look at them, and bought them. They are in storage right now, so I have no idea how they will work once installed, but we were impressed with them enough to buy them.

Comparing the specs of the Elextrolux, and seeing what looked like more reported problems with them, we were happy to go with the "lower end" Frigidaire. Time will tell if we were right! The other plus is the Enegry Star rating, and the ice maker (we didn't want a water dispenser)...The ice maker is the simple type in the top corner and takes up little space. The best is the price for how much space you gain.

Thank you so much for your input! I went to a showroom yesterday to see the Electrolux Icon set (the only one around Baltimore that had them on the floor!) I was really impressed with the quality and the layout. The Thermadors give up just two inches but that seems to make a difference in the layout (There are no shelves on the whole bottom half of the Therm too.) The *only* thing that somewhat bothers me is that I wish the ice machine was in the middle like the Therm or the GE Monograms because I have two daughters who can't reach or will pull the ice down on their head, but I could always put in a second container of ice down on a lower shelf given how much space is in the freezer! We are also getting an ice machine for a wet bar but I hate to think of 8- and 10-yr old hands going in it every time they want a drink! I've also heard good things about the Electrolux ovens and particularly like the roll-out racks which are included (and all extra for the Therm.) So, that pushes me towards the Electrolux as well. There's a nice rebate going on right now and I'm up to three items b/c the fridge and freezer are considered separate appliances. That's an $800 discount, need to investigate a couple other Electrolux appliances (have heard good things about the bev center, wine cooler and/or ice machine. Not sure about the dishwasher vs the others) because I could get it up to $1000. And, going with the Electrolux is certainly lower than the Therm even with the 1-2-Free deal, especially since it's not guaranteed to be the best products for my situation across the board. Anyway, that's where I stand right now. Would love to hear more - Thanks!

For what it's worth, we've had more problems with Frigidaire refrigerators in the last two years than with all other appliances combined. Their ranges and microwaves are good products, but their reefers and dishwashers are very poor quality. Years ago, when they were part of GM, they were an awesome product. Too many people still remember (or still have) those products. It's not the same today. I have to agree. We have a Kenmore upright freezer whose insulation shrank, sucking the interior sides with it. As a result, a couple of the shelves fell down. We traced the Sears part number to Gibson, which is owned by Electrolux and apparently assigned to their Frigidaire group. After being burned on that freezer, we won't buy anything made by Electrolux.

Did not get to see the Electrolux icon model. Looked at both the fridgidaire and Electrolux models. They did not yet have the professional handles on the the fridgidaire model when I was looking at them. The bins on the Electrolux were nicer and glided better. Was going to go with the fridgidaire as it was at a better price point but when my appliance dealer came across the Electrolux pair for $3400 I grabbed them. The only drawback of them is the fridge doesn't even have a water dispenser inside the unit. That is the only thing I wish it had.

All refrigerator and all freezer vs. large french door?

What a nice layout! I had considered a 48" side by side built in and did not feel the freezer was large enough. I currently have a 36" full size French door unit and I don't find it to be large enough. I actually love the freezer drawer and it holds quite a lot, but my fridge is always tight on space, half consumed by juice and milk and not much space between shelves. It appears your kitchen can accommodate two larger units such as the Frigidaire you show. Electrolux also makes separate 32" units at a more reasonable cost than Sub-Zero, Your kitchen also seems better suited to a built in or counter depth style. When making our decision, we had considered putting the current fridge in the laundry room but we figured if we are going through all this expense and we have the space, why not store all of our food in the kitchen where we cook? My KD shared that the only regret one client had with a similar reno is that she went with a 48" built in vs. two larger units. These new sizes at better price points a very new and like Danielle Waters mentions, these a a non standard size--something to consider for future replacement or your cabinet design. Personally, I don't like the idea of refrigeration in a closed pantry where I store dry goods.

We've had the Elux pair for 3 1/2 years without issue...Actually, 2 of the fridges and 1 freezer. When we got ours, the Frigidaires weren't Energy Star, and I much preferred the interior fit and finish of the Electrolux Icon to the Frigidaire...Nicer drawer layout and the glass shelves vs wire. Not sure how they compare now.

Glad to hear some positive feedback about the Electrolux/Frigidaire units. I may give them a try, but perhaps with an extended warranty....
