Photos a bit indistinct to be sure, but looks an awful lot like burning bush, Euonymus alatus.

Left unpruned, these have the potential to get quite large and certainly not a good choice immediately adjacent to a walkway. Since these are a listed invasive species in MA and their sale prohibited, I would encourage their removal and replace with something less problematic and more in scale with that particular location.

I second what GG48 says. If you keep them, you (and your neighbors) will forever be removing seedlings. I think I rooted out about 50 from under a crab at my inlaw's yesterday on the far side of the house from their burning bushes. This after doing the same thing this spring.

I think that is exactly what these are. You are prohibited in My state from buying and selling these. I think these will be added to the compost pile this winter.

if you literally cut it to the ground.. with no insult to the root mass ... it will be near that size again .. in a year or three ...

you must use a stump killer.. or get digging ... though i wouldnt use a truck or some such.. as you risk pulling out the sidewalk ... a sharpened shovel.. and a sawzall with a tree blade .. and some good exercise will get you where you want to be ... and if you are going to dig it up ... do not cut it to the ground first.. leave some 2 or 3 foot tall stubs.. so you can use them for leverage ...

unless you chip it.. i dont recommend putting this thing in the compost pile ... neighbor tried that with shrub cuttings.. and 5 years later.. had to pull his pile back apart.. as intact wood does not rot very fast ...
