I suggest maintaining a small manageable area around the house as a nice lawn and letting most of the area be a field with whatever grows there. Just keep it mowed. Your flower bed will have weeds regardless of what you do so if that's your concern you can mulch the flower beds and use pre-emergents to help keep weeds down. For the area you want to maintain as nice grass, you can (1) kill weeds with Roundup and plant seed or (2) kill weeds selectively with Weed B Gon or a similar product. If you use a selective weedkiller you have to wait a certain number of weeks before p!anting. Read the instructions. If you want to plant Bermuda, that's done in late spring and it's often established by sod rather than seed. Cool season grasses like Kentucky bluegrass, fescue, and rye are planted in late summer/early fall (right now). If the weeds aren't too prevalent you could walk around with Roundup, spot spraying them (and nearby grass as collateral damage), mow low (bagging clippings), and plant seed as an overseed. If it's mostly weeds it would make more sense to kill everything with Roundup and then seed. Once you seed, you have to keep the seed bed moist by watering lightly several times a day. After the grass starts growing, decrease the frequency and increase the amount. What is your watering situation? You need that in place before you seed. KBG can take 2-3 weeks or more to germinate and is hard to establish in an overseed because the existing grasses will outcompete it. If you want KBG, kill everything first. Tall fescue takes 1-2 weeks to germinate and can be done in an overseed. It often needs overseeding in the fall after hot summers. Rye may not do well in Tennessee, I don't know. You could check with your local extension service to see what they recommend for grass seed. Since crabgrass is a problem for you, you should use a pre-emergent next spring when the forsythia blooms.

Please ignore the advice to Round-up your two acre yard. Before you start down the chemical stew route, get down on your hands and knees and actually look at the weeds that are the problem. You may realize that the crab grass is not as widespread as you think - the plants sprawl deceptively. Pull one out and you may be surprised to reveal a nice swath of decent grass minus the small hole that held the crab, which will fill in on its own or can be addressed with a few seeds. What I'm trying to say is, don't do anything until you get to know the yard. Get to know the weeds you are dealing with because they require different strategies. Learn what grass you have and the kind you'd like to have by studying neighboring lawns.

Even roundup doesn't work this well & RU doesn't have a pre emergent in it. "Sedge ender" got it at ace.
