It's valance time!! Want to show me a style you like?

Well it's been almost 4 years since I bought the fabric to make valances for our kitchen and dining room windows. Amazingly, I still love the fabric, color wise it's a perfect fit for the rooms. The bummer is it's 45% rayon and won't work well for pleating. The style I wanted originally had pleats so now I've got to figure out something else and I'm stuck!

So here's pictures of the fabric and the rooms the valances will go in...what style do you feel would work best? I'm completely open to any thoughts as long as it's isn't forget the valances! LOL

Oh! And I also have a coordinating solid in the lighter gray blue. thanks!

I wouldn't give up on the pleats. I like simple valances with box pleats at each end or one more pleat if it is a very long valance. One way to add interest to a simple valance is to add some trim ... I love trim!

All the major fabric houses have great trim -- Fabricut, Schumacher, Kravet, Stark, Robert Allen, Duralee, etc

Tried this one before with great results...boxpleats, but with the pleats in the coordinating fabric. The result is 95% of the fabric you love visible with just a hint of accent. Constructed similar to a box skirt in a sofa. Mount it to a single shelf type board and BAM you have a great valance. Also, if you can blind stitch the hems even better.

Dianalo. We haven't even investigated that much, but know that IKEA has something we like, that reasonable. I googled the Applad and found $7 - what a shock...how can they sell it for so cheap (or how can the others sell if for so much). At these prices, we're now considering that we will do both uppers and bases. That way when/if I get tired of them, we can just get new faces and it will fit. I would have liked to keep my bases but they just don't fit with IKEA. I would have had to get a new sink base anyway, plus we were going to get a trash pull-out. Needing only 8 more cabinets, it's why not just get it all to match? We've never been hard on our cabinets (even having raised 4 kids), so I'm sure the quality is enough for us. They are opening a location near us soon, and I can hardly wait!!!

Thank you both for the replies. I'm very attracted to a certain rug that doesn't seem to be too flowery to me. Tell me what you think? I don't have tons of choices to choose from because I'm getting these area rugs for free. The company made a mistake while installing our tiles which runs in most of our downstairs and we'd both rather not pull all of it out and start over. The mistake isn't huge but because they are a service oriented company that thrives on word of mouth, they want to keep their customers happy. They sell carpet and flooring and carry only a limited amount of rugs. They will be giving me 2 of them to put into my "formal" living room and dining room combo. It says on the link, and on the sample itself that this is a light blue rug... let me just say NOT! It's really a greenish rug and not a blue green either, I'd say it's a light green beige background... especially in my greenish taupe house. Also, if it IS lightblue and I couldn't see it in the store or in my house, perhaps it's a good thing too. It may be a rug that will adapt to paint changes a little better? eandhl2, sorry, but I don't have a recipe...I just made it up. I can tell you the ingredients though as they're what we use when we make golumpki. I saute up onions and garlic in diced bacon until soft. Then I add cut up pork...if it's raw, I saute it in the pot in the bacon fat... if it's already cooked, then I just add it with the rest of the ingredients. Then I add canned diced tomatoes...a big can, and a box (32 oz) of beef stock. If I pre-cook the rice, then I just add it later so it doesn't overcook. If I cook the rice in the soup, then I add about 3/4 c with double that in water. I add salt, pepper and dried dill and then I add chopped cabbage. Simmer, covered until the cabbage is very tender and the flavors blended...probably 45m to an hour. I love it with a slice of good seeded buttered rye bread. That's how we always ate our golumpki....and with a side of boiled potatoes....no one counted carbs in those days! And since traveling to Prague, we learned that nothing tastes better with a cabbage meal than dark beer...and I don't even *like* beer!

I don't understand why rayon wouldn't take pleats...it's a natural fiber so it certainly should. Use a clapper and you'll get them really crisp.

Hard to recommend without feeling the hand on the fabric. I bought a fabric that had a stiffer hand so made faux hobbled roman shades with it as it didn't want to pleat across, but made beautiful folds down. Another fabric was much softer so I made a balloon valance with it. So it's more about the hand than the fiber content....presuming it's a drapery weight fabric.

Thank you for the feedback about the pleats. I found a gal on Etsy who will use the fabric I have and make the valances custom. My choice originally was to get a pleated valance. She had a picture of one she'd done in her store and it's beautifully made. When I showed her the fabric I have and told her it's 55% linen and 45% rayon she said she was very familiar with the fabric and the rayon didn't hold a pleat for that pattern well. Since posting this, she's emailed to say she has some remnants of a similar fabric and she's going to see if she can make it work. If not she may be able to find another similar pattern with pleats that would work instead. My fingers are crossed!
