does anyone have a plaster range hood cover?

If so, I have some questions, because I'm trying to do a plaster finish on my range hood.

First of all, I'm wondering how it will fair
above a hot range. I would think it can be done, but my guess is, it
will have something to do w/ the material the plaster goes on? My guys
are building the shell out of plywood. From that point on, I'm not sure
if the plaster can go directly over the plywood, or if something else
needs to be put on there 1st, then the plaster. Should sheetrock be put
over the plywood for the plaster? I'm totally lost on this one! And,
does it need to be sealed w/ anything to make sure it doesn't change w/
the heat below? Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks eam. That was quite a hood! Mine is very minimal compared to that one! 8' ceilings & 30" range. So, I'm going to have a 24" H x 24.5-25" D x 29" W +/- hood. But, someone did talk about plastering on the plywood in that thread, so maybe that's doable, if primed. Or, should I go w/ the screening, then plaster? Why do I like the more difficult things to do?!?

I don't know if you're still looking, but I just installed a Sirius 1200CFM 901 vent hood insert, and it's THE BOMB. Love love love it. It replaces a malfunctioning Futuro I had originally installed. The Sirius is tough, heavy-duty, gorgeous to look at, has dishwashable stainless baffles instead of the hard-to-clean mesh, and above all is very very quiet. And strong enough to lift small kittens off the floor. ;-) I like the position of the lights towards the front, so that the cooktop/range is well lit and any irregularities in the tile backsplash are minimized. The only caveat would be the position of the operating controls, which are to the far back right and slightly difficult to see unless you stick your head up in there. I assume this problem will go away as I learn them by heart and no longer need to look at them when I press. All in all a very solid, well-crafted and easy to install vent insert. We love it! Can warmly recommend.

I've been torturing myself over the range hood question, having decided almost everything else by now, but just not zeroing in on this one - I'm getting a 30" KA gas range, 4 burners, have a relatively small kitchen and we like to cook but are not super cooks nor do we do a lot of heavy duty frying, greasy, meaty stuff. I don't want a big monster hood as a "focal point" - just a basic hood with a low profile that does its job without making a lot of noise and looks nice enough. This one caught my eye while I was googling around tonight - anyone have it and can tell me if they're happy with it? It's nicely low priced but that always makes me wonder if it's good enough ;-). Thanks.

I am interested in this range hood only because of the sone level. Its on back order now. 860 CFM is too powerful for my electric range and actually over the 800 CFM limit in Florida unless you have make up air. If I get this hood I will make sure not to use it on the highest setting. I hate noise that my current hood makes and we are going thru a kitchen reno next month. I am also looking at the Proline 185.30 which only goes to 600 CFM. the ZLine 617.30 goes up to 400 CFM. Did you get the hood?

Does a ductless range hood insert need to have open ventilation?

@3onthetree Okay, that makes sense. I hadn't considered the pressure issue. But this is an insert that is designed to be put inside a cabinet or frame. And I have seen a lot of these ductless inserts placed inside frames like mine that are against the ceiling and with cabinets on either side and no visible vent at all. So are they all installed wrong? I have watched so many tutorials and read so many blogs and no one addresses this issue. What if we create a top out plywood with a hole, then install a duct that goes up through that hole to blow the air out of the top? That way I could still enclose the frame and I wouldn't have to worry about dust collecting in the cavity, but the air would have some place to go. Would that work? You're welcome! I have no experience with plaster myself, but I have LOADS of experience with joint compound and drywall. If you decide to go that route, give a holler. Good luck!

Stucco is pretty labor intensive. Plaster is similarly labor intensive if it is to physically hold to the surface. Both require lathe, and multiple coats. http://m.wisegeek.com/how-do-i-apply-stucco-over-wood.htm

All of these different materials! Joint compound & drywall, stucco & plaster.....UGH!

eam, I'm not sure I'll be using either joint compound or drywall....will I?!? If I do, you will be my go to person! :)

live-wire, thank you so very much for that article. I like that they're putting the roof felt on the wood, then the wire mesh to stucco over. Even tho I'm not doing stucco, it sounds like a great idea for plaster, as well. But 1st, I'm not sure what the difference is in stucco & plaster. I may be wrong, but I've heard of stucco for being outside of home & plaster in old homes for walls. Perhaps both can be used in the same context & there's just a difference in the ingredients? I'm just trying to do a range hood, a small one at that, but I know I need to take certain things into consideration. First is heat. Then durability in a kitchen where there could be extra humidity, as well. I don't want this to come crumbling down a few months later, or catch fire!! Instead of the lathe, can the mesh take it's place? If I'm using plaster, will that be ok? Are you familiar w/ working w/ either of these materials &, if so, do you have a preference to use? I have a friend that has plastered walls. Walls that are already up & have texture over them. He's going to do this for me, but he hasn't done anything other than walls, so he isn't sure about having to put something on the wood 1st, or needing something else for this project. This is where I think I'm really stuck. I just want a smooth finish that looks like the ones I see in pictures! I love the look. I'm going to be putting a piece of barnwood at the bottom of the hood, as well. Maybe I should be more concerned about that!! :)
