Katrina killed every plant I had
Comments (9)Bigoledude, I'm about to dig up my water canna rhizomes to prepare for winter storage (they're not winter hardy here). You're welcome to some of the divisions if you'd like. I also have a few seeds. Given a very moist location (mine is in a bog next to the koi pond), this plant will multiply rapidly and provide bright yellow blossoms on tall stems (each 4-5' stem will have 4-8 blossoms) through summer into fall ... this one bloomed until an early frost took out the last buds. Since it is so prolific here, I would caution you to keep an eye on it, lest it become invasive down there, where frost woudn't be a limiting factor. At this point, however, it seems maybe you need something that's going to fill in quickly and be low maintenance. It prefers full sun, but seems very happy here in good morning sun until about 11:00 a.m. You're going to want some bushy plants, groundcovers or plants to spill over out of containers also, aren't you? Any ideas there? I don't know how sweet potato vine does there, but it's great here in summer, and comes in shades from chartreuse to deep burgundy (the latter even gets inconspicuous lavender flowers when mature). It grows very quickly, too. I have some in my greenhouse (tucked the annual planters in there when cold weather approached), both colors I mentioned. I haven't tried rooting any cuttings, but will give it a try if you're interested. I have wonderful memories of three visits to New Orleans - wonderful city and wonderful people. I'm afraid many people see/hear about the glitz of Bourbon St. and overlook the true treasures the city has to offer. So glad I was able to take my family along in May '05 to share some of my discoveries there. I'm particularly fond of those live oaks at Jean Lafitte National Park at Chalmette ... how did they fare? It's hard to comprehend the amount of work to be done along the entire Gulf Coast - I'm glad to do any little bit I can to help. Diane...See MoreI am sure this has been asked a million times, but
Comments (14)There is nothing wrong with Honda engines, plastic cam, etc. I am just not a fan of the Honda deck on the Harmony II series (which is more than $300 anyway) for a self propel version. Also - any of the MTD or AYP built mowers (Murray, Cub, etc.) are crap and you need to stay away from them if you want self propel. Go with a Toro or Lawn Boy - by shopping around you will find a RWD self propel in the $300-$350 range that will serve you well. The 20017 Toro will have the lowest price point of the various RWD models offered by Toro and Lawn Boy. Now if you don't like personal pace/sens-a-speed - than you are going to spend a like more money to get something from Honda/John Deere/Snapper/Ariens that will last (IMHO). Happy shopping!! Jim PS - Toro dealers typically don't deal on price of walk behind mowers, although now that Recyclers are sold at Home Depot and other box stores - they discount their list price a bit more than they used to....See MoreI'm sure this has been asked a million times, but root mealies?
Comments (5)Some kinds of fungus also present as fluffy, cottony stuff, but if you see actual bugs, that look more or less like regular mealybugs but on the roots, well, this was my recommendation in my blog post on mealybugs: If your plant has root mealybugs, not only should you give up on saving it immediately (you can try to take cuttings, maybe, if it's that kind of plant), but you should put it and the soil in which it was planted into a trash bag, seal the trash bag well, bury the trash bag, carve a granite monument to warn future generations of the dangers buried in that spot, and then salt the earth above the burial site so that no living thing will ever grow there again. This is perhaps an overreaction, but if you're sure that that's what you have . . . well, I wouldn't take the risk of spreading them to my other plants unless the plant in question was incredibly valuable. Other people reading this may be able to be more calm on the subject (we'll see)....See MoreHow do I kill off millions of Aphids?
Comments (10)I don't use any oils or pesticides for insect control as I grow organically. google Arbico. they specialize in beneficial insects. I ordered three praying manti egg cases. one for my yard and for my neighbors on both sides. one egg case hatches abou two hundred manti. They devour every insect you hate. and once they live out their life cycle they lay their own egg cases. so now I have an ongoing population of manti. I live an hour north of death Valley so its a desrt hot blazing summers freezing winters if my manti can stay alive year after year your area will support them as well. also consider Ladybugs these are literalyy the toughest bug in the pack they eat every single pest bug you can imagine problem is when they eat everything they move on to find more food. I even take my baby manti indoors to work over my bonsai and houseplants I leave a couple of windows open all the time for my cats to get in and out. so manti have an escape, or entrance if they choose. I grow vegetables, tobacco, fruit, housplants and bonsai. this was a permanent and inexpensive solution to my bug problem. Good Luck!!!!...See MoreGeorgysmom
