Looking for a bird bath that won't crack when frozen

I've had resin bird baths crack when frozen, and plastic ones crack when frozen. I'm wondering if a copper or stainless steel bowl used for a bird bath would also crack when frozen?

There is no power where this bird bath will be located, so a heated bird bath would not work here.

I use rubber feed pans and they laugh at ice. If you leave a few inches of space between the water/ice and the top you can just turn them upside down and stomp on them and the ice drops out.

I got my first one at a local bird supply store and it worked out so well that I bought a few more on Amazon. I have a couple of big ones that sit on the ground and a smaller one that I put on top of the copper bird bath. The copper bird bath doesn't crack when frozen but you have to carry hot water out to refill it.

The birds seem to like them, maybe the rubber is easy to grip.

Big one with robins. The robins come for water in the winter.

Small one on top of the frozen copper bird bath. It's sitting on top of a stone in the copper bath.

I use the big ones all year round but put the small one away in the spring.

Just found a pic of a turkey at a big feed pan on the ground with the small feed pan on top of the copper bird bath last March. The copper bird bath is really on an angle, probably thanks to squirrels and crows jumping on it.

If you put the rubber pans on an angle it's easier for small birds to drink out of one side.

I had the same problem with a concrete birdbath that I found on the curb on trash day. If the cracks are visible, use some silicone caulk to seal them up---silicone is save and won't harm the birds at all. If the cracks aren't visible, or it just seems like the water is kind of seeping out, consider painting the outside of the birdbath with masonry paint. It will bind tight to the concrete and stop it from leaking. I hope this helps! Good luck :-)

Scully, yep - we are a bit warmer here, but it's the overnight hard freezes that crack birdbath basins. On cold winter days, if I notice an ice skim forming, I'll add warm water too, but if I'm gone for the day the risk of freezeover escalates. The heater works 24/7. We've had a warm fall too, but if the Old Farmers Almanac is right, once it gets here, we're in for it this winter. Btw - Everytime I open this thread I get a mental picture of Woodstock ice skating on the birdbath - brings a smile to my face ....... thanks! Another little aside is that in the heat of summer, I take a pitcher full of ice cubes out to the birdbath - the flapping about definitely increases when I cool it down! :o) Love my birds!

Herbal baths for hard dry cracking feet?

Is this something new or something that has been on-going? I ask because I find doctors are great at treating symptoms but not always so good at addressing what is really wrong - like what is causing your feet to be dry and cracking. If it is new, what has changed? And I am assuming that this is causing you pain or bleeding and is not just a "looks dry" sort of thing for you to be so worried. Because personally I have dry and cracking skin on the back of my heels and it's never caused me any discomfort. It's just the way my skin is and I don't try to fight it.....I don't think I could anyways without a great deal of constant effort. That said, I find the healthiest thing for anyone's feet is to not be in shoes. Air your feet out as much as you can. Socks are ok...use cotton socks or some other natural breathable fabric if your feet get chilly. And for dry and chapped skin, I like to use a simple calendula salve. I make my own out of calendula blossoms that I've grown and harvested along with olive oil and beeswax. Simple stuff to make but it does wonders for me. FataMorgana

Uh-oh... Freezer won't open...

OK, an update... The blow dryer method didn't work, it had overheating protection and kept shutting itself off. I removed the door. It still took some doing even after taking off all the screws/bolts. The freezer was almost full of ice/snow. I used some to line a cooler and transferred the food... then took much of the food to a friend's house, she had room in her freezer. Some of the tomatoes had freezer burn so threw them out. A batch of sauce we make still looked excellent so saved it. About 50lbs of deseeded, dejuiced maters in freezer bags that were in a big coated box look great still. If they defrost I'll run them thru the Spremy. It's not like I don't have enough tomatoes on the plants still, which are still flourishing... Now to get her back here later today to get at the 3 screws that go on the bottom of the door... Mark
