What Do You Do With Extra Seedlings?
Comments (18)For four years, I did a booth at several local farmer's markets. I got into it because I had so many plants left over from wintersowing after I gave and swapped alot away. The hard part is finding a farmer's market that doesn't already have a plant seller, or at least one that didn't sell what you have to offer. I stopped because 1) two other vendors in my main market started carrying the same plants in the same sizes I was selling and 2) the new markets were charging too much for a booth. If you can overcome 1 and 2, and you still like the idea of selling (and making money at it) you have to also check out the answers to 3) does your state or county requiure a liscence to sell plants (Maryland does not) 4) convincing the market that since you are not selling food and have no employees, you don't need an expensive insurance policy 5) figure out how you are going to package your plants to sell. I got 3, 4 and 6 inch pots for free from swaps and generous neighbors as a way to recycle the plants. 6) figure out how you are going to label your plants, keeping in mind the large number of novice gardeners you need to sell plants to. 7) figure out your costs and prices including soil, seeds and lebels (ink if you are printing them out on your computer) Finally remember that early in the summer, the produce growers usually sell flowers and vegetable starters and hanging baskets until they have produce to sell. I made good money and some new friends my first three years. The last year, I just broke even and decided that it wasn't a worthwhile investment of my time. But for a few years it was a nice second income. I know other s just do a plant "garage sale" which is easier if you can get the traffic....See MoreWhere do you buy Miele DW Salts & what detergent do you use?
Comments (14)The tabs really do a great job (there are some older threads with loads of posts singing their praises!). We used Cascade Complete initially, but Miele came out with the tabs sometime around when we first started using our DW. A bunch of GW'ers tried them and kept raving about them so we decided to give them a try. The CC worked perfectly fine and everything came out spotless. However, the tabs seem to give the loads an extra level of clean and sparkle. Also, the air in the DW just had a fresher quality (odor) after running a load with the tab vs CC. The DW after a CC cleaned load isn't bad, just less fresh smelling. FWIW, some on this forum use 1/2 a tab (and possibly even 1/4 tab?) to clean most loads. Again, my stuff comes out fine with a 1/2 tab, but a full tab just seems to raise that sparkle and clean to another level. It's not overly noticeable, in fact, I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me, but some others here have said the same thing. We don't usually run our DW every day, so I like the sense of security (that everything will get clean) that using a full tab gives. Last night I had a pretty empty DW, but one of those few items was a stinky plastic food container that would have been quite foul smelling by morning let alone this evening, so I ran the DW before bed instead of waiting, with a 1/2 tab and everything came out great. PS there were some posters who had trouble with grit (undisolved soap powder) build up in their rack glides from using Ecover so you might want to do a search for those threads discussing that....See MoreWhat He Detergents do you all like
Comments (50)I use Cheer HE Liquid. It has a Color Guard formula. Someone mentioned that some detergent faded their darks. I do not have many really dirty loads. If I do I use Tide HE liquid. I look for the original scent. I do not like the smell of Gain from the bottle. It gives me a headache. However, my son uses it & I don't notice the smell on the clothes when they are dry. I've never used any of the other ones mentioned. I have seen the Method, but none of the others....See MoreFL detergent, what do you recommend?
Comments (150)I conducted a test this weekend pitting Tide HE powder against Persil. For raw cleaning power, you can't beat Tide HE. However, if allergies are your concern or you suffer from sensitivity issues, Persil does rinse cleaner and with almost no residual scent. You'll encounter some people who will claim Persil to be some kind of miracle detergent, but honestly it's just a big waste of money unless you are married to its other qualities -- less scent, better rinsing. In my test, Tide HE outcleaned Persil hands-down, and Persil even contains oxy bleach which gives it an unfair advantage that was not realized in my tests. Anyone who prefers Persil for its "superior" or "amazing" cleaning ability is just fooling themselves, in my opinion. I welcome those people to conduct a test of their own to show how well Persil cleans versus the leading domestic brand. Step up. Here is a link that might be useful: Tide HE vs. Persil Test Results...See Morelarsi_gw
