Samsung or Maytag?
Comments (10)Whirlpool Corp. bought Maytag some years ago. So the Maytag you buy today will be a Whirlpool product. I currently have a basic (now discontinued) Samsung that has been working since 2009. Replaced a Maytag Neptune FL that was worn out. Also have purchased other Samsung products. This spring I purchased their 800 series dishwasher and am very happy with just how quiet it is. The Samsung replaced a noisy, overpriced, Kitchenaid Superba, which is another Whirlpool product. Years ago I purchased the just released new model, Maytag H2O french door refrigerator. Basically just a few days after it was a year old the circuit board in the back goes out. What was bad was it had an electrical issue and was quite black. Luckily there was a metal plate over it so it didn't catch the house on fire. (Refrigerator sets back inside cabinets.) Whirlpool had just bought out Maytag and to make a long story short their customer service was beyond rude. Since that time I have avoided Whirlpool like the plague....See MoreTop loaders LG vs Maytag
Comments (31)We agree that HE machines use less water therefore less water has to be heated to whatever temperature is chosen. I believe this is obvious. The ES guidelines say nothing about ambient water temps, nor do they define "hot" or "cold" in the formulas or in the text. To get the ES rating/label, the manufacturer only has to comply with the formula. One of the annoyances for consumers researching current HE machines is trying to learn exactly what each manufacturer means when they say or write "cold", "warm", and "hot" for a particular machine. (which intentional obfuscation has been discussed to death on other threads.) For example, my HE machine (Duet 9400 from 2/95) has buttons for selection of cold/warm/hot. If I select "hot" in a cycle that doesn't use the built-in heater, and purge the line so that 130F water flows in from the first drop, my actual wash temp is about 105F. Due respect to Whirlpool and the US government's ES formula, that is NOT what I or anyone I know considers to be hot. Hot-tub "hot", maybe, but not laundry-hot. I resent this industry-wide obfuscation and/or failure to disclose this most basic of information. The number of consumers who have been surprised and disappointed to learn of their expensive machines' deficiencies in this regard are legion....See MoreLG top loader or Maytag front loader - how to choose?
Comments (7)If it were me I would stick with the Maytag (or Samsung) front loaders. If you're buying soon, May is Maytag Month so there may be some extra discounts now, especially closer to memorial day. The Maytag front loaders are highly rated by Consumer Reports. Also the mold issue is not what it once was - they now build the machines with air vents and fans to keep everything fresh. Also, as for "leaving the doors open" I always just leave mine open a crack (not sealed). FYI Maytag is made by Whirlpool, who also has some good front load washers. The WFW92 is feature-rich and priced nicely right now. As far as top-load washers go, they don't work the way they used to. Continuing tightening of the energy and water requirements has lead to a whole new way of washing clothes. Comments (15)I'm glad that so many of you have gad success with your front loaders. And, I fully agree, it's important to follow the manufacture's care instructions; which I always do with all appliances. I have four children and as a result, I wash frequently. All white are washed in hot water with bleach. I'm am fastidious as well and my laundry never sits in the washer or dryer. Everything is washed, dried, folded and back where it belongs within a couple of hours of entering the process. This is my experience and I've had several friends with front loaders who also have the same issues. I can not speak for their process, but I know it's been an issue for them as well. Another friend just got rid of her front loader and went back to a top loader because of the issue....See Moretvq1
