Evergreen shade tree recommendations?

Hi. I want to plant an shade tree in my front yard. I want an evergreen bacause even during the winter the front windows of my house receive blinding sun. Several houses in my neighborhood have large Camphor trees growing in the front yard. These provide a generous amount of shade to those homes. I was thinking about a Camphor (I actually have one growing in the backyard on the property line) but I know that can grow to be quite gigantic. Are there any other alternatives that might do well in Central Florida? I'd be looking for something that would grow medium (to slightly large) height and would prefer something leafy (as opposed to a pine, fir or palm of some kind). Any tips appreciated. Cheers.

This question has been asked numerous times on this website and usually with a list of specific trees. One can only wonder how frustrating it then becomes for the original poster to search in vain for what are excellent suggestions, but not readily available.

Let me answer your question with some suggestions instead.

Start with the local nurseries and big box stores. See what they have to offer. Next, do some research - how tall will they grow? Are they invasive? Are they truly evergreen where you live? What do they poop - fruit, flowers, seeds, leaves, branches? How much water do they need? Learn as much as you can about those trees and your selection becomes much easier.

Keep in mind that most nurseries and the big box stores can order a specific tree for you as well.

Some of the upright hollies such as 'Oakleaf' will give you dense evergreen screening, and won't get so darned wide, which will allow you more room in your bed for other plants. If when you say 'tree-shaped', you mean spreading up top - that will be a detriment to growing things underneath as they will cast a lot of shade onto your perennial bed -- unless you like growing shade-loving perennials like ferns, hosta, etc., it seems to me. You may also consider Photinia, Carolina Cherrylaurel 'Bright n Tight', Japanese ligustrum, Chinese evergreen oak, Holly osmanthus, Camellia sasanqua, Chindo viburnum, Leatherleaf viburnum, lots to choose from.

The highest quality, long-term screening plantings for shaded sites in cold climates are still the traditional yew, holly and box. There are many kinds of holly, unless your New York(?) climate is too severe for much other than Ilex opaca you might be able to use a different kind of holly, that looks different. Otherwise, there are many cultivated varieties of that species - maybe a variation like yellow berries instead of red would be dramatic enough to please you.

How wide of a canopy do you want on the trees? What is on the other side of the fence, by the way? Will neighbors mind a large canopy spreading over their yard? Perhaps you really just need a tall hedge? If you need a wide canopy for shade, you'll get falling debris in the pool. All trees drop leaves, flowers, etc. No getting away from that. Maybe you need wide canopy trees further away from pool and then more upright hedge plants along the pool portion of your fence? Something denser and more refined than a tree? For along the pool, small trees such as Terstroemia, Yaupon holly, Sandankwa Viburnum, Callistemon, Podocarpus, Oleander, Pittosporum, Feijoa, Camellia (shade), Wax myrtle, Osmanthus fragrans, Sophora (Tx Mt. Laurel), Dahoon holly or hybrids, Satsuma mandarin or Kumquat if hardy, 'Teddy Bear' or 'Baby Grand' Southern Magnolia, Cherry laurel 'Bright n Tight' (possible berry issue) would be nice and evergreen. Native evergreen ferns include Christmas Fern and Ebony Spleenwort. Another non-native evergreen fern (like Autumn) is East Indian Holly Fern. Asters like sun for the most part (there is a white woods aster that can take some shade, but I don't know where you'd buy it). How about variegated Solomon's Seal for that area? Of course Hostas are a shady standby also, as well as Cast Iron plant. Epimediums are also very popular these days for shade.

Papa Jim....ironically enough I had planted a magnolia in the very spot where I wanted my shade tree to be about eight years ago. In all this time over those eight years (and I am not exaggerating) that magnolia has not grown a single inch. Weirdest thing ever. It looks healthy and blooms every year but doesn't get any taller (about four feet in height). Anyway..the plan is to transplant the "mini magnolia" to another spot and put a new shade tree in its place. Cheers.
