Question for today 5/5
Comments (22)Exactly. I laughed about the 'junk food quilting' title, because that's probably me. But Fran has a point. How you choose to quilt IS the right way to quilt, once you get past a few basics. If you enjoy whipping out tops when the mood hits you then go for it! If you like the piecing or fabric art and hate the quilting end of it, let somebody else finish it! Quilting is the quintessential folk craft, and folk crafts don't come with rules. It's your baby, and your ballgame. After having spent many countless hours drooling over pictures of antique quilts, and also the prize winning quilts at shows, the common denominator the go across the board as to complexity and style, and there are those of us who enjoy primitive styles (think Gee Bend) as much as those five year projects (and they are awesome and I appreciate them too). To get too Martha Stewart with how a quilt should be made would turn off a lot of prospective quilters. What would I improve? Everything about my quilting, and it's happening gradually as I get more quilts under my belt. I love all my quilts, including the absolutely crude first one I ever made. Given my skills at that time, it's a masterpiece for my ability level and made with so much love, it's got a special place now on my daughter's bed, who quilts much better than I....See Morequestion for today 5/27
Comments (14)It very much depends on the pattern and material. I may do it both ways on one block. I am just finishing up on a spider web quilt where eight pieces need to come together in a point. Seams are pressed open on that for sure, so that they can fan out and lay flat. I often times press a seam in one direction and then when sewing it to another piece catch it and sew it on the back in the opposite. Not nice finish, and it bugs me, even if it's not noticeable from the front. So, now I put some forethought into what way the seams are laying on both pieces when I join them, and press them so that they all lay in the same direction as the needle is moving through the cloth. Makes life easier....See MoreToday's (5-25-16) Heat Index Values
Comments (3)We've had our AC on, on and off, for ages because we've been in the upper 80s and even the lower 90s a lot. My Yankee-raised hubby can't stand being hot so I spend half my time freezing. Still, being freezing cold probably is better than burning up. The heat index outside peaked at 95 degrees here this afternoon, which explains why I was so miserably hot working in the garden. I stuck it out and finished as much of my To Do list as I could, and then I came inside to a freezing cold house! When he is at work all day, I do not keep the house cold like that....See MoreToday 5/5/18
Comments (13)Thanks all! I do love Alnwick’s globes, but they blow SO quickly! Yet, everyone is drawn to its blooms, so it stays. Luckily, it also stays small for me. Miss Alice is indeed tiny. She is new, so her companion plants nearest are lisianthus. They will only last the spring and early summer, so she will have more space if she needs it. I’ve learned to not quite trust any DA sizes. lol It’s gotten warm here fast, and I’m still trying to get my companion plants in the ground. I’m very slow with everything. I need to learn that saving $ on shipping isn’t really saving, if I can’t plant them all fast enough! I’m better off just ordering what I can manage to plant in a few days or a weeks time. I do tell myself it’s not entirely my fault, as my drip system has been only half installed and Javier again nowhere to be found. Prosperity is such a pretty one, galgal! I have Pink Prosperity, but still in a barrel. My Hybrid Musks haven’t bloomed yet, and Pink Prosperity wants out, before she does! Bubble Bath and Felicia are on their way, though. I checked on my Crepuscule. It was swamped by CA poppies and Mel’s Heritage. It’s got sweet little blooms! How’s yours doing? We really are nuts out in the dark! I’m glad that I’m still interested enough after many years of gardening to do such crazy things. Lisa...See Moresunnyborders
