Need to choose a mid priced island hood for 30 inch induction

Hi everyone,

We will have a large 10 foot island in a large kitchen in an open concept space. Our 30 inch induction cooktop (Thermador) needs an island hood. We prefer the angled shape of the island hoods pictured in the links below. We plan to get the island hood powder coat painted to a light grey/blue colour and keep some stainless banding on the bottom. After extensive searching my options seem to range in price from $800- $4000. I need to be closer to the $1300 mark, so can't afford a Modern-aire style hood ($4000 range). I have two possibilities within the price range that are both available from a large range hood company here in Canada. However, I don't mind importing one from the US either (we have a place in the US where we can ship and then drive and pick-up across the border). So I am open to either brands.

The first hood seems too deep for our needs. It has baffle filters, the shape we are seeking and is 36 inch wide so is a good width for the 30 inch cooktop. It is 1000 CFM maximum. Here is option one (the super deep one).

The next one has the option of stainless filters (not baffles, but at least not aluminum), is 23 1/2 inch deep but is only 30 inches wide (so a bit narrow). The maximum CFM on this one is 600.

Which of these two would you suggest? If neither of these options, what other brand and model of island hood would you suggest ($1300 or less) that has the same shape as those pictured.

Here is a plan of the kitchen and surrounding area so you can imagine the hood in the open concept space. Cabinets are already received so not looking for the cooktop to be relocated (love that it will be on the island).

Nominally, the aperture area (where the air is drawn into the hood) would be six inches larger than the contour of pan bases used on the cooktop. This would require a hood with a 22-inch by 36-inch aperture, depending on pan sizes used and hob sizes and layout Overlap is particularly important in island configurations where there are more ways cross-drafts can cause the rising effluent to miss the hood aperture and not even be captured, much less contained. With sufficient air flow rate on full power, some (not very large) effective increase in aperture around smoothed hood edges may be gleaned, but not much more than the edge size.

The first option seems to have a middle section that doesn't draw air, this is non-optimal as some of the rising effluent hitting that part may not be captured after reflection from the surfaces.

The second option, as noted, is insufficiently wide to meet the 36-inch goal. Also, the hoped-for equivalence of clean meshes to baffles is somewhat thwarted when the meshes are flush with the hood base instead of being farther up in the hood like commercial baffled hoods, although this is typical of mesh filtering. Last, the "honeycomb" design appears to make the effective aperture significantly less than the typical 50% of a pure mesh or baffles, but this is difficult to judge. It should work ok if the flow rate is sufficient to get the air velocity at the mesh gaps to be adequate (150-180 ft/min).

I cannot help with any price determined manufacturer suggestions.

Thank you very much for your helpful comments, Kas. Okay so neither of our two options will be great. I was afraid the 30 inch one would be ineffective. The other one does seem of reasonable quality but too deep.

Anyone know of a mid-priced one I can try (around $1300-1500 tops). I can't afford the best out there and that is okay.

Kksmamma, would I like a larger range? Well sure! Would I get use out of it? No! I have been thinking about what the previous owners of this house was like. There are miles of countertop along the wall run. All the uppers are 15Ã¢ÂÂ deep nice wood. There are two upper corner cabinets and two lower corner cabinets with the largest Lazy SusanÃ¢ÂÂs one could possibly imagine. There are pull-outs galore in all the base cabinets. The doors are very thick solid cherry. YetÃ¢ÂÂ¦there is one little 30Ã¢ÂÂ slide-in range and no extra wall ovens. There is one regular sized refrigerator a mile down at the end. In this good sized kitchen the sink is directly behind the range. There is not even a recirculating fan to be found. Although I have never had the need for a prep sink in the smallish kitchens I have owned, this kitchen is begging for one. ItÃ¢ÂÂs just me and my husband now so I really donÃ¢ÂÂt have the need for bigger and more appliances but itÃ¢ÂÂs odd that this kitchen seemed to want to be a real chefÃ¢ÂÂs kitchen but fell short. IÃ¢ÂÂm getting very sick of island range hood shopping and am thinking of the XtremeAir px05, it has the look of the Faber that I love, has decent cfm's and the stainless baffles I want and comes in a 42Ã¢ÂÂ and is half the price of the Faber. I really like the Faber but the model I want comes in 36Ã¢ÂÂ and 48Ã¢ÂÂ and IÃ¢ÂÂm thinking IÃ¢ÂÂll be safer on the paranoia as to scale vs. big island small range with a 42Ã¢ÂÂ. @User @Anne Mulholland Cleaning is the one thing that I really dislike about the oven. But to be far I would hate cleaning any oven :) The top cooktop is extremely easy to clean. Most of the time I just use soap and water. Maybe once a week I will use Cerama Bryte to really polish the top and make it look new again. The grill is easy for the most part. The heavy metal rack and tray\basin can be just washed normally in the sink alone with the aluminum housing it sits on. The steal tray\bason that the rack sits in get discolored and nothing I have tried will remove it. The aluminum housing can also be removed and cleaned. What I dislike about the grill is there is no way that I can see to clean the top were the element is. If anyone has figured that out let me know. The actual ovens are about the same as every other oven that I've had that does not have the self cleaning feature. In my case, I removed the oven racks and the easy slider racks and bottom panel that @A Bowditch referred to. These can all be cleaned in the sink. Even though the manual has instructions on how to remove the vertical side rails that he racks lock on to, I could not remove them. (Cleaning would have been a lot easier once removed). I also removed the back plate that the fan sits behind. Then I used a oven cleaner that was recommended to me by a friend and let it sit overnight. I did not use anything like easy-off as i read that this could damage some ovens and I didn't want to risk it. Some hard to remove spots required the help of a razor blade to help remove. All in all I wish this oven had a self cleaning option, but without being able to remove the side rails i don't know if i would trust using it anyway. Hope that helps.

First, downdrafts are not very good hoods. If you do much more than boil water, then you need a real hood, especially since your Kitchen is so open to the rest of the home. About the only time downdrafts work at all is if the pots/pans are right up next to the raised fan -and- shorter than the top of the fan by a few inches. That means no cooking on front or center burners. No using tall pots, even next to the downdraft. I used one for a couple of weeks in a rental and I hated it! It was noisy and did nothing to capture splattering grease. The range & downdraft were on a peninsula with a raised counter behind it. One of my kids was splattered with grease and I had ban my children from sitting at the counter when I was cooking. (Steam also billowed up from the front burner when I boiled water and the downdraft did absolutely nothing to capture it.) While I don't generally like cooktops/ranges in islands or peninsulas, at least your island can handle it. You appear to have at least 24" on the outside side of the cooktop, 36" b/w the sink and cooktop, and at least 18" b/w the prep sink and other edge of the island. You also appear to have at least 24" b/w the back of the cooktop and the seating overhang behind it. Personally, I'd want more than 36" of prep space, but that is the minimum recommended prep space. However, I see other issues. Are you and your family quite short? I'm asking b/c wall ovens mounted under the counter are much lower to the floor than ovens in a range. Unless you are quite short, I strongly advise against an under counter wall oven. Ditto an under counter MW, unless it's a MW drawer. I advise you to go somewhere where they're installed and try to spend time pretending to use them. Think about taking a 20-pound turkey + stuffing + pan out of such a low oven. Another issue is that the island is a "barrier island". It's a barrier b/w the Prep Zone & refrigerator and b/w the Cooking Zone & refrigerator.

Selected the Bosch Benchmark 36" Induction with the stainless trim. Saleslady took a bit of time to explain the differences to us. Just like the Thermador, I can put multiple pots on at one time, no limit to the number other than I what I can fit. She said the learning curve was pretty quick. Bosch knows a lot about electronics, has a history in Europe with induction and a very similar repair rate as GE according to Yale Appliance. I went with Bosch Benchmark. So, that decision has been made. No sooner do you solve one problem as you encounter another. The blower. I bought the 36" Zephyr Downdraft to replace the old Dacor. It was either that or the Best. I don't care. They both have 18" telescoping hoods when fully deployed. As an example, my old Dacor will only telescope to 8". Hopefully, this will help with some more capture. I know it's not perfect, but it's best I can do in this particular kitchen. Here is the next problem. I already have a remote blower. It's a hybrid between an in-line and external blower. I think this application is more common in the South than elsewhere. The blower is located on the interior side of the exterior wall. An external cover is located on the outside wall of the house. The blower parts are just inside the wall. Is that in-line or external? Who the hell really knows. Anyhow, here is the problem. I already have a blower fan unit functioning and installed. The appliance lady wants me to order a new, separate blower motor. Isn't a motor a motor? Isn't a fan a fan? Why do I need a new external or remote blower unit? This goes for any brand that I might choose to install. It seems to me that electricity and wiring and motors don't care. Could someone tell me why I am wrong? I hate to pay $1,000 for a motor that I don't need.

I like my Kobe hood, which I ordered based on reviews at GW and a picture online. Easy to clean, relatively quiet. The Kobe closest to the shape you want seems to go for $1278 USD at AJ Madison (island hoods must cost more than wall mounts, because mine wasn't that much). If your limit is in USD, you might want to check it out. They have another model, but this one looks like it might have better capture. It isn't, however, the same shape you were looking for, and in Canadian dollars, it might be too expensive.

Kobe Island Hood

Is the first one too deep because if you put up a 34" deep hood, it will cover the whole island or hit your heads or something? This Kobe is 27" deep.

Thanks ginny20 for your suggestion. I will check out the Kobe one right away. The first one I posted seemed rather deep at 34 inches -- deeper than necessary and thus too visually overwhelming for the space perhaps. The island is 51 inches deep from counter to counter and just over 10 feet long.

I wish I could be more help. I was surprised at how limited the selection was. I don't think your budget is small at all, whether Canadian or US. Island hoods are expensive!

Thanks again Ginny20. You have helped me before (on our built-ins). Yes, we knew the hood for an island would be expensive. Just don't want a cadillac one (Modern-aire). Found these two as well. I like that they have baffle filters. I will need to find a better image of the Dacor one as I am not sure how large the baffles on this one are. The xtreme-air one may be too good to be true.

Any opinions out there on the specs for the Dacor and Xtreme-Air island hood posted above. The Dacor is also rather deep at 30 inches.
