Advice Needed - Put a 36' cooktop in an island with a downdraft?
Comments (5)First which is more important, stove top or oven cooking? If you do more of one than the other, that is were you should concentrate on the best scenerio. Second, from what you have posted, it appears you cannot vent outside. If this is correct then consider an induction cooktop. It is more efficient than traditional electric and gas. It is faster than gas but doesn't radiate heat around your pan. You pan IS the heat source, so you are not venting out as much heat as you would with either of the other two stove tops. Electrolux, Bosch and Diva have great 30" tops with good size burners. Most of the other brands offer a good selection in 36". Downdraft ventillation is better than nothing, but you fight science. Heat travels up and with it goes smoke, grease and smell. A downdraft is limited....See MoreUsing Miele induction cooktop with a downdraft
Comments (0)I am new to this forum and have been really appreciating all the insights. I am replacing an ancient (20 year old) Whirlpool electric cooktop (36 inches) in an island with either induction or gas. Due to construction issues, a pop-up downdraft is my only option (the existing unit has a downdraft built into the middle of the cooktop). I am prepared to use a remote/inline blower to get stronger CFM's, cut noise, etc. I have narrowed the induction choices to Miele, Wolf and Thermador. I have not been able to get a clear answer from Miele technical support whether their induction cooktop can be used with a downdraft that is flush-mounted like the other two would be, or whether the downdraft would need to be set back a few inches from the cooktop. Due to space limitations, I have to use a flush mount downdraft (FYI - Miele technical informed me that a downdraft cannot be used with their gas cooktop.) Do any of you have a Miele induction top with a downdraft, and if so, how is it installed in relation to the cooktop? Any advice re Miele vs. Wolf vs. Thermador induction would also be welcome. Thanks very much for any help. I'll be living with this cooktop for 20 years likely and don't want to blow it!...See MoreNeed ideas for replacing cooktop - gas vs induction
Comments (18)@Patricia Colwell Consulting You're right I should have posted some photos of the space. There isn't much wiggle room and behind the cooktop there's only about an inch or so which isn't enough room for a pop up vent. The end goal is to replace the cooktop with either induction or gas and do as minimal reworking of the cabinets and venting as possible. Unfortunately it's not as simple as just replacing one-for-one. I wish it was! And of course, our relator told us it was simple when we bought this house. The cabinets aren't what I would choose if I was designing the kitchen but it works for now until we can redo the entire thing years down the road. These photos make the room appear quite yellow but that's just the light balance. Everything is white. The floor is more of a neutral brown. The cooktop is at the far end adjacent to the double oven. Behind that wall is the washer/dryer. Currently the GE electric cooktop has a downdraft blower built into the cooktop itself. It works great but I can't stand cooking with electric especially after having gas in our old house....See MoreBlack Induction cooktop with stainless downdraft
Comments (2)Downdrafts do not suck that is the problem. Can you not put the cook top on an outside wall . In fact if I had to choose a window over my sink and a cooktop on an outside wall I would choose a sink in the island...See More- 10 months ago
