Planting tomatoes ON TOP of the soil outdoors - yay or nay?
Comments (18)OW, I sense you have a tendency similar to mine--you want to do everything as thoroughly as possible. :) Not necessarily a bad thing, but you can spend a fortune on a relatively small return, then have to do it over differently next year. My own favorite tomato growing technique, either in the ground or above, is to simply make sure that there is a suitable area (no container? Just prep an entire section of ground about 2' deep and introduce worms to the soil as well) and stick that 'mater plant in as far as it will go--in a container, I would not put the root ball on the bottom (trust me--ask me how I know), but rather about 2/3 of the way down at most. I'm very fond of my soil here--it has high concentrations of vermicompost (it's not just worm castings, it's also partially decomposed organic material) and small porous volcanic rock called DryStall, so it remains nicely aerated and relatively loose (although it can be packed). It grows ANYTHING. Tomatoes are 'hungy' plants; they feed and drink heavily, so make sure that you are giving them plenty to work with no matter what soil you have. It's not really as hard as you seem to be making it, is what I'm saying. Nice big containers, good soil and plenty of water/nutrients and all will be well. Or jam them in the ground if you have the drainage and same thing. I'm kind of wondering where you are that you think you might need a sump pump for runoff... :) I just took the hose and engaged in a little hydro excavation leading to where I wanted my extra water, and you know what? I didn't even need it. You might try that first to test the idea... KISS is your friend here, I think...but that's just me. :)...See MoreYay/nay to brass sink faucet and chrome shower faucet in same
Comments (4)I love mixing metals. However, I think I remember reading on here that is best to not mix within elements. So all faucets should be the same metal but cabinet hardware (light fixtures, etc) could be a different metal. I am no designer so take my words with a grain of salt :-) By the way, is there a reason you don't want all the faucets to be brass or chrome?...See Morereplacing old gas piping..yay or nay
Comments (4)I doubt the line going to your water heater is actually plastic. More likely it's plastic covered stainless steel. If you are doing quite a bit of modification to your existing piping it may be more cost effective to replace it and use the new corrugated stainless steel tubing (CSST). It is more expensive per foot, but the labor is much less to install. I think CSST has higher pressure drop so you will probably need a larger diameter tubing. I would check into this as well as the plastic tubing, which I've seen used outside to supply a standby generator on Ask This Old House. Good luck, Tom...See MoreMixing brass & copper in the kitchen - yay or nay?
Comments (26)My advice is to go for it, Kathy! We didn't get the brass faucet (my husband didn't like the bridge style and besides, they were way too pricey for us....) We went with "champagne bronze" which works, but honestly, I don't love it. My hope was that it would echo the brushed gold cabinet pulls. It sort of does, but a brighter color would have been better. We haven't installed the pot filler yet (still waiting on that GE Cafe range; ugh), but my husband chose copper and now I'm worried since it doesn't match the faucet. We could have gone with copper on the faucet (the fake kind) since it stays shiny and the sink has the patina, and so would match the hardware on the appliances. I may end up changing out that sink faucet. (It may be too many metals; although we don't have stainless in there, so that helps.) Either way, they all look good with the Cambria Britannica gold, and the SW pure white cabinets as well as the green cabinets. I still haven't chosen a backsplash, believe it or not.... (please ignore the cereal and junk; just visited IKEA and the grocery store!)...See Moresheloveslayouts
