Solid color tile with travertine
Comments (4)Personally I wouldn't try to find something that looks like travertine to go with the travertine. I think one will end up looking bad against the other no matter what you do. Instead, focus on the contrast. It flows better :) I'm trying to find some photo's of how I've done that in my bathrooms...some are in progress photo's. First in DS's bathroom (this pic is dark) but if you look at the counter, floor and baseboard I have all contrasting materials going on. The counter is a granite in black with tan rocks. The floors are travertine in the soft tan, and the baseboards are nordic black antique granite tiles cut up. They go with the shower which is travertine and nordic black: his shower/tub In here the solid is the crema marfil marble squares against the chocolate marble (dark empreador): and in the master, I have travertine with a gorgeous walker zanger tile (Mantouche in croc, tabac color...which is DEVINE in both the tabac and the ivory) I had this disaster during construction...my tile dealer stole my tile (I'd paid for it) and sold it to another client. He also cut twice as many pieces in 1/4 squares than I asked for, so to do the floor in the master I had to do some real searching to find travertine to match the existing travertine. What a nightmare! I searched in three states, literally, and couldn't get a good match to the travertine, and couldn't find his supplier to get more. I looked at artificial and real travertine...so I have some experience trying to do what you're doing :) Given that experience, I highly recommend stepping away from the travertine and looking at some wonderful solid color options in either ceramic or perhaps a solid color stone. It's much much easier and personally...I think it works well....See MoreBacksplash to warm up white-ish cabs & granite
Comments (48)omg -- I am so embarrassed. I can't believe it's been almost three years. I know it's ridiculous, veevs, but I still have not put in a backsplash! I collected so many sample tiles (all of which are still sitting on my laundry room counter), and then I just got overwhelmed! And then tired. And then bored. And then we moved on to other major house projects (front entry, portico, landscaping, etc.) and other decorating (window treatments, etc.). And then I just became very zen about the whole thing and decided not to stress about it, to enjoy the paint for now, and to just pick out other kitchen things first (eg, got the bamboo shades budge suggested). In fact, it's funny that you're reviving this thread now, as I await delivery of the chandelier that I finally chose for over the island. I'm hoping that getting that up next week will provide a sudden epiphany re the backsplash. I hope to return to that project this fall/winter. Of course, I'm still happy to hear suggestions and welcome any photos! Sorry the thread was such a tease...but there will be a happy ending one day! In the meantime ... enjoy your kitchen and the many delicious meals you will share with your family ... and tell them all just to be zen :)...See MoreWhat do you think of my backsplash choices(pics)
Comments (20)Hey Pluckymama, Did you ever get any pictures of the WZ? I would love to see it. Still deciding between that and the sonoma. Dh thought the sample of the WZ was so shiny, but he is leaving the decision up to me. I'm not doing the mosaic and was wondering if I should even do something behind the range. It's only a 30 inch and the range isn't even centered in the kitchen. It's not a huge space and I'm wondering if I should just keep it simple with the subways in a running bond pattern. I use so many accessories, colors and flowers thru the seasons. It's nice to have a neutral backdrop for that. The sonoma tile does come in 1" by 2" herringbone sheets, so I could do that behind the range. Thoughts? One salesperson thought I wouldn't really have enoough space with a 30 inch range to do mamadadapaige's herringbone with the 2x6. Here is the picture of the 1x2 sonoma, although it's not in the right color....See MoreFinished White Kitchen -- need help with backsplash PLEASE!
Comments (32)I agree about the subways. They give such a simple sophisticated look without detracting from your granite and other design elements. I have a similar color schemed kitchen and DH and I went back and forth about our backsplash. Finally, decided to go with the matching subways (to our cream cabinets) and we LOVE them! Behind our range top we chose to set them vertically and we love how it gives it just a slight twist or custom feel. Anyways, I will post some pics of mine today or tomorrow to show you. Perhaps, you can show him pics of people with coordinating subways to change his mind. That's what I did!...See MoreLynne Moe
