Vinca
Comments (8)Vinca (the annual - Catharanthus roseus) is quite easy from seed. In my zone, I start indoors, about 8 weeks prior to planting-out date. I start seeds under flouro. lights on a light cart. I cover the Vinca seeds with growing medium, cover the container (I start in clear plastic containers with clear covers to keep the moisture/warmth in) and place under the lights. They germinate in a little less than a week with very good germ. rate. Been doing it this way for years and have always had great success. By covering the seeds with growing medium, you are providing darkness - you don't need to cover them with a dark cover or hide them in a warm cupboard somewhere (as I've read in some seed growing sources). I've got my beloved Blue Pearls seeds, will be starting them in about another month :)...See MoreAnyone had experience with Vinca?
Comments (23)I feel I just have to say this. In the state of Wisconsin, Vinca minor is listed as an invasive species, and it does a lot of damage. It gets into the woodlands (via the birds and blowing seeds) and it competes with the native species for space and nutrients -- usually to the detriment of the native species. After all, one of the reasons it's so popular is that it's so easy to grow! I did check the Massachusetts list for invasive species, and it's NOT listed there (where you live tom8olvr), but you might keep this in the back of your mind in terms of keeping your vinca under control. Just a thought. MacThayer...See MoreWhere to Vinca Seeds?
Comments (1)Do you have any pictures of the vinca you are interested in so that we know what you are talking about? Usually, the trailing one refers to the evergreen perennials, especially Vinca minor, which does so well in cooler climates. OK, I took a look at the Swallowtail website and they don't even sell the Vinca minor or V. Major, but do sell a lot of the Cathranthas roseus varieties, which is COMMONLY known as Vinca. The reason they don't have it right now, is that they are sold out of their seasonal crop of seeds. This isn't the time of year to purchase some varieties of seeds. Call or email them to find out when their 2012 Catharanthus seeds will be available. I don't think that their rating was all that bad and it appears to me that they did what they could to resolve most of those issues. Sometimes, the customer can be the reason for seemingly poor service. They sure do have a plentiful listing of varieties. Try the Forum (here in gardenweb) that rates venders and see if Swallowtail is mentioned....See MoreNeed help with planting vinca periwinkle!
Comments (4)The name 'Vinca' is both a species and also a common name for Catharanthus roseus. Did you sow Vinca or Catharanthus rosea? It is very unusual to grow VInca from seed. Anyway, the plant you have is neither. It looks more like some kind of green veg such as Spinach....See MoreTiffany, purpleinopp Z8b Opp, AL
