Ogon 'Gold Rush' Dawn Redwood: is it smart; or what?
Comments (13)Horseman, your question about the growth rate is similar to what I am wondering. My tree has not added any height at all since it was planted last year. Neither does the trunk seemed to have thicken enough for me to perceive, if at all. If the late winter freeze issues had not distracted me, I would have been posting questions about the slow growth rate. Yesterday, I read on a website describing the cultivar, that the 'Gold Rush' cultivar does grow slower than the species. My 'Gold Rush' has a clean trunk about 3 feet up before the trunk forks of into two thin, flexible and arching, but still slightly branched and well leafed out trunks which makes up the canopy of the tree. It looks to me that the only reason the trunk is not branching out lower on the trunk is due to the way the grower pruned and trained the tree prior to shipping it to me. I planted mine in mid May of last year, and yes in the heat and drought of the summer the leaves did tend to want to turn brown. Whenever I saw the slightest amount of browning in the leaves, I would water the tree well, and each time, the leaves responded quickly, by changing again to their nice bright healthy color. Currently the leaves of my 'Gold Rush' look golden, and I can see some of the healthy bright green of the cultivar's normal spring leaf color trying to emerge from the base of those golden colored leaves....See MoreDawn Redwood - Dual Leader
Comments (43)Ken, we seem to be bucking heads lately. Maybe it's in the water one of us is drinking that is causing this. Aside from that I respectfully disagree. Correct the lean by pulling it back into vertical at the bend. If you do nothing it will correct the lean on its own but on the top side which you want to avoid. The saw is a mute point. I could have used a hack saw with a 24 tooth blade to cut off that small leader and accomplished the same look he did .LOL The man of action did a good job because he got expert advice and knew it. A great looking specimen it will be. We also have Edwin giving him the correct cultivar name 'Snow Flurry' which all of us so called experts didn't pick up on. Great post and follow ups. Comments (6)Ashley, Did you purchase the one with the leader already bent to the ground growing that way? Or is the leader disproportionately to tall and thin to support itself. In any case you need to stake to get it vertical. If growing that way it could be a challenge to get it vertical. We will need to see a photo. If to week to stand on its own drive a narrow stake next to the trunk and secure the leader to it. Buy the stretch tape and narrow aluminum stake at your local nursery. The stakes come in different lengths. Something seems amiss. I have never observed this tree with a leader to weak to stand on its own. Possibly grown in crowded conditions with not enough sun light along with nutrient deficient soil as contributing factors. Dave...See MoreWhere to buy a Dawn Redwood "Gold Rush"
